Sgraffito Tile

For this art project we used our knowledge from our previous unit, scratchboard, to create a sgraffito tile. Sgraffito is patterns formed by scratching through a surface, to gain contrast in the lower layer. We created our first draft of our design on scratch board because we were familiar with the material. We practiced this because the clay is "bone dry" which means that he clay is all the way dry, and extremely fragile. We first cut out the shape of out tile. I chose the shape of my tiles to be a hexagon because I wanted to activate all six sides with my design. Then we applied 3 layers of black under glaze to have something to scratch off. As you can see, my original design from my final design I changed several aspects. I wanted to add the stars in the sky because I wanted to fill the negative space in the sky. One thing that I really struggled with during this project was not scratching too deep into my tile, as well as making sure my surfaces were even. Overall, I am happy with the outcome of my project because I really liked the composition of my design. If I were to change one thing about my project I would add more patterns to the background to add more contrast to my tile.
