Thanks to all the teams for their work to show appreciation towards our ESPs at Jenifer. We are a hard working team providing education, care, and support for our communities children. We all play a role in providing for our students and our ESPs our vital to our schools.
Safe travels to any staff members who will travel during the Thanksgiving Break. I hope this break gives us the opportunity to pause and show gratitude to our families and friends. Enjoy this time to relax and recharge before we make our push to Christmas.
Dear Team,
This year JMS will “Ring the Bell” at Albertsons on Saturday, December 13th from 10-2.
If you would like to volunteer your time for this event please add your name to the list below. If you have any questions, please contact Aaron. Thank you!
If we have more people who want to volunteer their time, we can add more time:)
Albertsons - Saturday, December 13th from 10-12
PUBLIC ADDRESS:
The public address for Hold is: “Hold in your room or area. Clear the Halls.”
PUBLIC ADDRESS - RELEASE:
“Students and staff, the Hold is released. All clear. Thank you for your assistance in making this Hold work smoothly.”
ACTIONS:
Students and teachers are to remain in their classroom or area, even if there is a scheduled class change until the all-clear is announced.
Students and staff in common areas, like a cafeteria or a gym, may be asked to remain in those areas or move to adjoining areas like a locker room.
Students and staff outside of the building should remain outside unless the administration directs otherwise. It is suggested that, prior to closing the classroom door, teachers should sweep the hallway for nearby students. Additionally, teachers should take attendance, note the time, and conduct classroom activities as usual.

Some points to consider when it comes to student attendance:
We have more students at JMS this year as compared to last year.
We did not have a school wide positive recognition system for attendance at the start of last year. However, Lori and Amanda have worked to create monthly recognition badges that we started in September. We have also added a bulletin board for perfect attendance recognition right outside the main office that is updated each month. Additionally, we select 1 student per grade level with perfect attendance to receive a prize of free movie passes.
We had grade level assemblies where admin discussed the attendance blitz and retaught expectations for attendance and consequences for poor attendance.
Our attendance actually was 2.5% better during the last week of the attendance blitz compared to last year during the same week.
Our attendance is currently the best compared to other secondary schools in Lewiston.
Our attendance is 1% better at this point in the year as compared to last year.
What are you currently doing as a classroom teacher to improve attendance or what incentives/initiatives are you or your team doing that admin may not know about?
The advisory class with the best attendance per grade level gets the donuts. You'll get donuts tomorrow before the Thanksgiving Break.
Big thanks to the PBIS team members who were able to attend the training last week. I appreciate the time you spent away from students to do the training. Behavior will always be an issue and we can continue to improve our systems so there is clarity for all in our community when it comes to student behaviors.
Last Monday, most of the PBIS team attended a quick training with our SESTA coordinator, Diana Morgan. Our biggest takeaway is that PBIS is designed to be an ever-evolving implementation process because PBIS is a framework. While we have not fully implemented PBIS yet, we are on our way. There is, of course, still much to be done at multiple levels.
In light of this, we must continue to improve our Tier 1 practices. Here's the "why" behind that: Tier 1 should be our school-wide systems that work for the majority of our students- about 80%. When students have clear expectations (Yeses), clear boundaries (Nos), and clear consequences across environments, it helps shift the school-wide focus and energy from the negative behaviors ("Don't do that!") to positive ones ("Hey, keep doing that!"). This, in turn, builds their self-worth and "inner wealth."
So, how do we support this complex process that initially sounds so simple?
The PBIS handbook should be the guide that outlines our behavior system, so the staff knows how to proceed in multiple situations. These behavior systems are broad enough to hold up across environments and between staff, while also being accessible to new staff. We acknowledge the challenge here, because the system must be flexible enough, yet also allow for consistency
The Tier 1 team will be updating the PBIS handbook to consolidate our behavior consequence menu and behavior matrix into a behavior consequence continuum.
To increase consistency between students, families, and staff, the student handbook will be updated to include PBIS elements by the start of next year to make sure parents and families are aware of our behavior systems.
The newly formed PBIS Student team will support the T1 team in creating videos to support behavior lessons taught at the beginning of the year. This will help to provide a clear, easily-accessed behavioral baseline for the entire school that teams can build upon.
This summer or early Fall, there will be a Tier 3 training.
Thank you Mrs. Gregg for the update on Fill the Bus!

As we continue to develop systems to ensure positive student behaviors, staff members have suggested the use of tracking systems to make sure students and staff are accountable for following through on responsibilities.
We have training with Diana Morgan at the district office on Monday with our PBIS Tier 1 and 2 teams. This should move us forward in our application of PBIS at JMS.
The purpose of this document is to serve as a guide to teams across the tiers of behavior support. The strategies and interventions in this document are intended to provide ideas and examples; ultimately it is up to each team (e.g., Tier 3 student-level team, 504 team, IEP team) to determine what strategies and interventions may be most effective for each student.
"Response to Intervention is a powerful framework that empowers schools to meet the unique needs of every student. By integrating high-quality instruction, universal screening, and targeted interventions, RTI fosters an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Schools adopting RTI frameworks not only improve student outcomes but also create a culture of proactive, data-driven decision-making."
Our RTI team consists of Mary, Heidi, Kinsey, Mandy, Bonnie, Justin, and Aaron. We still need a great 8 Rep for this team.
Most of the guidance remains the same for our drills. However, there is some updated information in the protocol. Attached is a guide if you would like to have your own copy.
In this broadcast, ASB Officers Hannah, Russell, and Lainey deliver the news at Jenifer Middle School (from our school's bulletin). This broadcast also includes segments about two of our after-school clubs (Pokémon Club and Art Club) and highlights from a recent volleyball match with our 8th grade volleyball players against several staff members.

My Life is Worth Living™ is the first animated series that models the human connection shown to be protective against suicide. The series tells stories of characters who face some of the most difficult issues that young people deal with and shows their evolution in the key decision: that life is worth living.
