Big thanks to Heidi and Mary for their work to organize our staff party on Friday. It was great to see so many staff members together celebrating. It was also nice to meet the spouses/partners of our staff members. From the sounds of the veteran staff members, we did a great job of representing JMS as we celebrated:)

Just a reminder about Friday 😊**YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE TO COME HAVE A GOOD TIME!!**
December 19th: Blind Date with a Book! It was requested to do this twice a year, and what better time to do it than right before break so you can "escape" over break!! Cover up that book and put a teaser on the front. Thrift or regift a favorite to share some great reads! If you're panicking about this-reach out to Desirae!!! She has these already done and ready for you 😎
We also talked about bringing holiday treat/snack/candy (think holiday chocolates you can get, candy canes, etc.) to bring and create candy bags to take home. I will bring some baggies for everyone 😊 TOTALLY optional!!!!
Excited to see what additional book will be added to my TBR list Friday 📚 As usual, we will meet at The Villa (they have soda and mocktails as well!!!) as soon as you tape your check out sheet on your classroom door or turn in your timesheet to Brandee!!! 🌟

We had a busy first week of December with an awesome turnout for our boys basketball game on Tuesday. Lots of credit goes to our WEB coordinators for organizing the event for our grades 6 and 8 WEB students. We also had another successful professional development day led by Justin. Thanks to all the teams for their effort to continue to improve our PLC process by developing units based on guidance from the 15 Day Challenge. I heard very positive feedback from our Social Studies team from their time with the Social Studies Curriculum Committee. Lastly, we had our Drama Club perform Murder on the 518 on Friday and Saturday. Great job to Trace Steele for his work in this production. We are lucky to have him as our drama coach!
This week will be busy as well! Our Fill the Bus project starts on Monday. We have games here at Jenifer on Tuesday and Thursday. We have Dept Meetings scheduled for Wednesday. And we have our staff part on Friday!
Please make sure you welcome back Mr. Norwood and Mrs. Lumley when you have a chance. It's great to have them back.

Some points to consider when it comes to student attendance:
We have more students at JMS this year as compared to last year.
We did not have a school wide positive recognition system for attendance at the start of last year. However, Lori and Amanda have worked to create monthly recognition badges that we started in September. We have also added a bulletin board for perfect attendance recognition right outside the main office that is updated each month. Additionally, we select 1 student per grade level with perfect attendance to receive a prize of free movie passes.
We had grade level assemblies where admin discussed the attendance blitz and retaught expectations for attendance and consequences for poor attendance.
Our attendance actually was 2.5% better during the last week of the attendance blitz compared to last year during the same week.
Our attendance is currently the best compared to other secondary schools in Lewiston.
Our attendance is 1% better at this point in the year as compared to last year.
What are you currently doing as a classroom teacher to improve attendance or what incentives/initiatives are you or your team doing that admin may not know about?
The advisory class with the best attendance per grade level gets the donuts. You'll get donuts tomorrow before the Thanksgiving Break.
Big thanks to the PBIS team members who were able to attend the training last week. I appreciate the time you spent away from students to do the training. Behavior will always be an issue and we can continue to improve our systems so there is clarity for all in our community when it comes to student behaviors.
Last Monday, most of the PBIS team attended a quick training with our SESTA coordinator, Diana Morgan. Our biggest takeaway is that PBIS is designed to be an ever-evolving implementation process because PBIS is a framework. While we have not fully implemented PBIS yet, we are on our way. There is, of course, still much to be done at multiple levels.
In light of this, we must continue to improve our Tier 1 practices. Here's the "why" behind that: Tier 1 should be our school-wide systems that work for the majority of our students- about 80%. When students have clear expectations (Yeses), clear boundaries (Nos), and clear consequences across environments, it helps shift the school-wide focus and energy from the negative behaviors ("Don't do that!") to positive ones ("Hey, keep doing that!"). This, in turn, builds their self-worth and "inner wealth."
So, how do we support this complex process that initially sounds so simple?
The PBIS handbook should be the guide that outlines our behavior system, so the staff knows how to proceed in multiple situations. These behavior systems are broad enough to hold up across environments and between staff, while also being accessible to new staff. We acknowledge the challenge here, because the system must be flexible enough, yet also allow for consistency
The Tier 1 team will be updating the PBIS handbook to consolidate our behavior consequence menu and behavior matrix into a behavior consequence continuum.
To increase consistency between students, families, and staff, the student handbook will be updated to include PBIS elements by the start of next year to make sure parents and families are aware of our behavior systems.
The newly formed PBIS Student team will support the T1 team in creating videos to support behavior lessons taught at the beginning of the year. This will help to provide a clear, easily-accessed behavioral baseline for the entire school that teams can build upon.
This summer or early Fall, there will be a Tier 3 training.
Lots to celebrate in the short time that we have been back at school. Have a look at the slide show for our recent staff celebrations.
If you know of a staff member who has celebrated a recent achievement, please share so we can publish here or on the staff shout out board in the faculty lounge.
