This is a short week with only two days! As we near Thanksgiving and after last week's ESP celebrations, I would like to share how thankful I am to work with such a great group of educators. The staff at Jenifer really are amazing! Just last week, Ms. Falkenstein was recognized as the Alliance Teacher of the Month! Congratulations Lindsay!
I hope our team enjoys the upcoming short break and spends this time reconnecting with friends and family. And of course enjoy all the American traditions for Thanksgiving :) This was one holiday that I really missed while I was overseas.
The picture to the right is Mrs. Campbell, Cameron's mom. She is the parent who has been bringing in all the snacks! If you see her, make sure you tell her thanks!
We are looking forward to seeing our students showcase their Drama skills at our Winter Theater Production of “Christmas Scene Investigators - Who Stole Santa Claus”? The production will be on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th. The show will start at 6:00 and students will serve desserts! We hope to see you there!
This drill will be coordinated with our local police department. Admin or police officers will clear rooms by unlocking doors. Once doors are unlocked, wait for the all clear announcement over the intercom before leaving classrooms.
Below is the communication that was shared with parents on Friday, November 22nd:
"Progress reports will now need to be checked via PowerSchool. Please check your child’s grades on November 25th through PowerSchool. If you have any questions about how to access your child’s grades please contact the school office."
From now on, teachers will not print the progress reports for students. Instead, the office will share a reminder for parents to check academic progress via PowerSchool. The office will send another mailing instruction for parents to access when we do our next mass mailing.
During November + December will have administrators from within our district visit and evaluate JMS using the ELEOT inventory which is attached for your reference. This is the second week for admin to complete their observations so be prepared to have people in your rooms this week, most likely on Monday or Tuesday. Admin are observing the active engagement of your students.
Visits started on November 20 and will continue till December 20. Admin are looking for classroom environments conducive to student learning.
For our PD on December 4th, we will have breakout sessions for staff members to attend that will move us forward on our achievement, engagement, and behavior goals. We will work in time for strategy implementation.
Currently we will have sessions on CICO training, Goal setting with approaches to learning skills, Using AI to help with interventions and enrichments, and a session for our Guiding Coalition facilitated by Mike Hagadone from Solution Tree
We are pleased to announce that Lindsey Falkenstein has been selected as the Alliance Teacher of the Month.
This is a much deserved recognition of Ms. Falkenstein’s dedication and commitment to JMS. Ms. Falkenstein is our Math Department Head and she teaches grade 8 math on our East Team. She also coaches volleyball and you will often see her supporting Jenifer Athletic Events. She does so much for her students and we are lucky to have her on our team! Please congratulate her the next time you see her!
Mr. Hoyt piloted VIVI last year and it was operational in his room last week. If you are not sure how to use the new tool, please let me and Ms. Stegner know and we will work to get you trained. Have a look at Mr. Hoyt's classroom to see the tool in operation.
Again, our maintenance team has been hard at work upgrading our Annex space. This room will be used as a sensory space for our Life Skills students and other students who made need support with their sensory diet.
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month we had several Nez Perce Language Instructors visit JMS on Friday, November 22nd.
Thank you (qeˀciyéw’yew’) Mr. Slickpoo, Mrs. Crescentia Hills, and Mrs. Trina Webb for sharing Nez Perce Language and Program values through traditional story telling!
In one month we will have our staff party at orchard lanes. This is a family friendly event and we encourage all our Jenifer colleagues to attend.
Last year we were able to provide some food and drinks and we will be able to do this again.
Please make sure you share your interest to attend the staff party as soon as you know that you can join.
Please see what we recently shared with parents about advisory and our Burro Block. Thank you for developing our offerings during our Burro Block and extended advisory!
The Importance of Advisory - Burro Block
Advisory is the first period of the day for Middle School students. The purpose of this time is to provide academic and social-emotional support, create a sense of belonging and school community. This is a time where students work with advisory teachers to develop behavior and academic goals. At Jenifer Middle School, we also use advisory for academic interventions and extensions through our “Burro Block” that happens every Friday. For example, in grade 6 Ms. McLeod ran an ELA lesson focused on parts of speech through Bingo. Ms. Hudson in grade 8 worked with students to develop respect for our Veterans by writing letters of appreciation to community veterans. It is important that students are coming to school on time and attending advisory so they do not miss out on these learning opportunities.
Here is my reminder about Vector Training which is required each year by all staff members. The deadline to complete the training is December 31, 2024.
Vector Solution courses for Lewiston Independent School District #1 Staff.
Please complete the following two courses by December 31, 2024. These are required annual training.
Once you have completed the videos, please notify your supervisor and share your certificates of completion.

This Friday during extended advisory, we will have students complete the Cognia survey. The Cognia survey assess students engagement (Cognia).
Behavioral Domain—Students’ efforts in the classroom
Cognitive Domain—Students’ investment in learning
Emotional Domain—Students’ emotions or feelings about their classroom and school
Committed—Students find personal meaning and value in tasks
Compliant—Students strive to meet learning expectations, follow rules, and actively avoid consequences
Disengaged—Students are unmotivated, actively avoid completing tasks, and have low participation
Our school goal connected to student learning goals is directly connected to the Cognia survey. More information about the survey will be shared this week.
Dear Team,

We were informed on Friday, November 15th that JMS and the rest of our Secondary Schools, did not have enough parents opt-in for the Wellness Survey. We needed 65% of all Secondary Students in the district to opt-in for the assessment and we had around 10%. As of now, the Wellness Survey is canceled.
The maintenance department is making significant progress with the update to the Annex classroom next to Mr. Feucht's classroom. This is just in time as we have had 2 additional Life Skills students enroll to JMS in the last 2 weeks.
Please note that our next Lockdown Drill is planned for Monday, December 2nd at 9:00. This drill will involve additional law enforcement to support the successful facilitation of the drill.
If you have feedback from any of the drills to date, please add it here:
Friday's Burro Block was one of the best that I've seen. The hour was full of great learning experiences for students and there were many intervention/extension opportunities on display.
Thank you to all the teams for working to organize these learning opportunities for students.
Thank you to Ms. Wolf for getting our gratitude wall started. It's been fun to see so many people add their notes of gratitude to the wall.

Veterans Day Parade was great! Very well done to our Jenifer Band!
Guiding Questions for Teachers On Veterans Day
As we honor our veterans today, I think it is appropriate for all of our Middle school students to discuss the following questions with their teachers, families and friends.
What can I personally do to help support our veterans?
What can I do as an American to help my country?
What would happen to our society and all the freedoms and comforts we enjoy if no one stepped forward to serve in the military?
What obligations do I have as an American citizen to my country and to my fellow citizens?
There are many ways to serve our communities and country, not just in the military. What is important is that all citizens find a way to serve.
The veterans we honor today have answered these questions by their selfless military service to our country. Their example inspires our future generations to answer the call to serve our nation and to ensure our freedom, prosperity and security.
How will you answer the call to serve your community and our nation, and honor the legacy of our veterans?
The Volleyball game was a ton of fun! This was one of the better assemblies that we've had. It's awesome to see the students sharing their excitement for these events.
Thank you to all the teachers that played in the game and those teachers who supervised the students in the crowd. Also, thank you Ms. Stamper for officiating the game! Thank you Bonnie Mac for running the clock and the scoreboard.
Thank you to Quinn and Justin for organizing the game and do the announcements!
The parallels to the workplace readiness skills and the Approaches to Learning Skills that I shared at PD are worth review for all teachers. There are some great resources to support the development of approaches to learning skills that connect well to some of the goal setting strategies that we've seen for behavior and academics.
November Dates:

Monday, November 11 - Veterans Day Activities
Tuesday, November 12 - New Teacher Meeting

Great work to our Music Dept with our Fall Concert. This concert was one of the the best I've seen from Jenifer Music Dept. Song selections and performances were all very good. We we're even treated with a special guest appearance from Mr. Akin playing the classic John Denver song "Country Roads".
Attached below is feedback for the fire drill we conducted last week. If you have any comments/questions/suggestions please add them below for review.
Iuri Melo will present "Tough Talk" at LHS P1FCU Performing Arts Center on October 30 from 6:00-8:00. Students of the Valley Advocacy Group will also join the presentation.
At JMS, we will have an assembly for grades 6 & 8 on Tuesday, October 29th with Mr. Melo and the SOVA group. The focus of the assembly is to discuss some of the issues schools are facing and tools to use to address the issues.
The assembly will be from 11:45 - 12:15. Please escorts students to the gym at 11:40 so we can begin the assembly at 11:45.
Last week there was significant work done in the annex to expand and upgrade our Sped Facilities. What was a storage room is now being renovated for a sensory space for students needing physical therapy.
The plans should allow students to have access to a larger safer space.
Big thanks to JoAnne, Cory, Peggy, and Tim who have worked with us at Jenifer to get the project started.
Also, big thanks to Mike who worked to clear the room and save items that would be useful to our drama production.
There was lots of fun for kids downtown this weekend at the Pumpkin Palooza event. It's really cool to see our community come together and celebrate cultural events. When I was a kid, this event didn't exists. Now, our downtown street is filled with games for kids and of course there was tons of candy to collect.
Excellent work to Brooke and her Cheer Team for volunteering to support the event. There were four stations where our JMS Cheer Team were setup to support the event by running games for kids.
Very well done! Great way for the students to get some service and action experience.

Important Dates
· For semester-long classes, grades can be entered into Q1 with a date up through October 26.
· For quarter-long classes, grades can be entered for Q1 with a date up through October 24. For quarter-long classes, a final exam for Q1 has to be entered with a date of either October 25 or October 26.

Semester Calculations
Teachers can choose one of the following calculations for Semester 1:
· Total Points (this is the default setting in PowerSchool)
· S1 = (50%)Q1+ (50%)Q2
· S1 = (40%)Q1+ (40%)Q2 + (20%)E1
Attached are reminder directions on how to set up semester calculations. To avoid problems with PowerSchool making incorrect calculations, teachers need to set this up before the start of Quarter 2!
Dropped Students
A “W” must be placed in Q1, Q2, E1, and S1 for all students who withdrew from class. Attached are reminder directions for how to do this.
Students with Adapted Curriculum
Do not to use an asterisk (*) for students who use adapted curriculum in your classroom due to their special needs. Instead, be sure to add the comment code “Making expected progress.”
Advisory
Advisory grades for Q1 will be P/F.

The Report Card will not include Work Habit grades or comments. Therefore, Work Habit grades/comments will not get entered in Q1. Work Habit grades/comments will get entered in Q2 on the November 8 progress report. Directions for this will be sent out in early November.

When completing feedback from PDs, please note that Column F will be utilized to determine the Strategic Plan Goal of Staff satisfaction. (By the end of the 2029-2030 school year, staff satisfaction will be at least 90%, as measured by the percentage of staff who identify how they will use the learning from professional development into their practice, as provided on the Professional Learning Feedback Surveys.)
Leadership team needs to determine how many staff members provided you with specific examples of how they were planning to integrate the learning from the PD session into their daily practice. We will need to review the feedback and tally how many members of staff can successfully transfer their learning to specific classroom practice.
An example is attached below:
The District librarian has been tasked with taking this program throughout all schools this year. IBOB is a competition based on a set number of books that are chosen for the year. Teams are formed, competitions are had, and then the winners come together for a District competition. We have received a grant from Clearwater Paper to purchase 5 copies of each book (18ish different titles) for your library. This is something that the Board supports and wants to see happening--it’s like sports, but with books!
