As the chief executive officer of the institution, the university president is responsible for overseeing the overall strategic direction and operations of the university. Their role is crucial in shaping the vision, mission, and reputation of the university, while upholding its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. They play a pivotal role in setting academic policies, fostering a positive learning environment, and ensuring the university's financial stability. The president acts as the face of the university, engaging with stakeholders such as faculty, students, alumni, and the community, while also building relationships with donors and industry partners. Additionally, the university president serves as an advocate for higher education, promoting the value and impact of the university both locally and globally.
For much of its history, the presidents of St. Edward's University were priests or brothers in the Congregation of Holy Cross. This began to change in 1969 with the creation of the Board of Trustees and the appointment of the first layperson to the office.
The Records of the University Presidents are held by the Munday Library Archives and Special Collections. To view these records, contact archives@stedwards.edu to set up an appointment.
