Years in Office: 1946-1952
Brother Edmund, who held doctorate of philosophy from the University of Chicago, oversaw a period of growth and renewal for St. Edward's University. After teaching at Notre Dame, he arrived at SEU at a time when veterans were returning from war and enjoying the benefits of the G.I. Bill. He worked with then-Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson to obtain three residence halls and two classroom buildings. Additionally, he oversaw the construction of a gymnasium (the Alumni Gym) and an on-campus scholasticate (house of general studies) for student brothers. He also began the process of building a new library. Enrollment, academic programs, and faculty numbers all grew during his tenure.
After Brother Edmund’s time as president, he would go on to work at the Notre Dame International School in Rome. He noted that while St. Edward’s lacked in certain places, they made up for it with “wonderful unity, a closeness, and spirit of camaraderie among students and faculty.”
Today, Hunt Hall bears his name and honors his legacy.
