Years in Office: 1969-1971
Dr. Edgar Roy Jr. was the first layman to be president of St. Edward’s University. This followed the transition of ownership of the university from the South-West Province of the Brothers of Holy Cross to a corporation managed by a Board of Trustees (which it is still managed by today). He had previously served as the administrative assistant to the President of St. Louis University. Dr. Roy's tenure was dominated by extremely dynamic shifts in the university's administrative structure, cultural identity, and potential for growth. The question of how Maryhill College for Women, and whether or not SEU would become a co-ed school, was also a prominent issue during this era. Following his time as president, Dr. Roy and his family remained in Austin for several years.
