Years in Office: 1885-1886
Peter Franciscus, who was serving as the vice-provincial for the south, came to Texas in October 1883 to recuperate from illness and to look for ways he could help the growing congregation in Austin. Before becoming president, he researched the legal parameters of Mary Doyle's generous donation of land whereupon the school would be built. In 1885 St. Edward’s was officially chartered and named him as its first president. At the beginning of the 1885-1886 academic year, Father Franciscus left campus to attend a sick call and tend to neglected missions and he stayed gone well into October.
