Years in Office: 1914-1919
Father DeWulf began his time at St. Edward's in 1908 as an instructor in mathematics and science. He went on to serve as the Director of Studies and the Prefect of Discipline before being appointed as president. Father DeWulf’s presidency was overshadowed by the looming presence of World War I. Financial conditions tightened for SEU as the national economy sank and young men began enlisting in the military, causing enrollment numbers to drop. Nevertheless, DeWulf demonstrated a dedication to finding avenues to keep the university afloat. He requested all faculty members to get more involved with the public and canvas the state to find students and he worked alongside Father George MacNamara to discover methods by which students could utilize the farm land available to the university.
