Before St. Edward's, Father Lisewski obtained his Ph.D. from Gregorian University in Rome, Italy and was an instructor of languages at the University of Notre Dame. Upon taking office, Father Lisewski's tenure was dominated by the long shadow of World War II and he spent much of his time on campus attempting to create a military service program for the university. Lisewski, along with members of the faculty, lead efforts in registering young men for the first Selective Service Act of the era. He also followed the orders of general counsel and the provincial to convert St. Edward's High School into a military academy.
