Before coming to St. Edward's, Father Murphy was prefect in the senior department at Notre Dame, vice president of St. Joseph's College in Cincinnati, and vice-rector in Watertown, Wisconsin. He had ambitious goals of constructing an east wing on Main Building to add classrooms and provide housing for the growing faculty. Father Murphy sold two lots to fund these proposed renovations, though the project was canceled before completing the planning phase. He was very involved in off-campus church affairs, often attending events in St. Mary’s parish. Shortly after departing St. Edward's he left the Congregation of Holy Cross and went on to serve as president of Columbia University (now Portland University).
