Father Peter Hurth joined the St. Edward’s community in 1885 as an educator on the growing campus and he quickly gained the respect of students and faculty. Though he was only twenty seven at the time, he had already served as the president of St. Joseph’s Commercial College in Cincinatti (now called College of Mount Saint Joseph). That summer he was instrumental in securing the university's charter and was appointed acting president when Father Franciscus left to attend other assignments.
In 1888 Hurth received approval to build new structures to house and educate the steadily rising number of students. The most notable of these new structures would come to be known as Main Building. Additional campus improvements in the early 1890s included a gymnasium and steam heating in the bathhouse. These physical improvements to campus, some of which can still be seen today, fueled the university's growth for years to come.
In 1894 Hurth was nominated to the episcopacy and assigned to Dacca of East Bengal.
