Dr. Patricia Hayes was president of St. Edward's University from 1984-1998. Hayes is recognized in Austin and around Texas for being an influential and visionary leader. Concern for the common good and a strong values orientation are hallmarks of both Dr. Hayes' personal philosophy and the mission of the institution she led. Born January 14, 1944 in Binghamton, New York, Hayes earned a BA in English from the College of Saint Rose in 1968 and a PhD in Philosophy from Georgetown University in 1974. Hayes attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University in 1980. Before assuming her position at St. Edward's University, Hayes was Vice President of Administration and Finance and Treasurer at The College of Saint Rose in New York.
Hayes made a name for herself by guiding St. Edward's University to unprecedented success, including increasing endowment by 60%, increasing enrollment by 20%, and adding an array of physical enhancements to the campus totaling more than $13 million. Hayes was the first woman and the second layperson to lead St. Edward's. In 1988, after being in Austin only 3 years, she became the second woman to lead the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber named Hayes their Austinite of the Year in 1990 based on her many contributions to the community.
