Years in Office: 1934-1937
Father Joseph Maguire first arrived on campus in 1920 and served as both the head of the chemistry department and, later, vice president under Father Burke. Much of his time as president was spent facing the continued financial pressures brought on by the Great Depression. He earned several victories that kept the university solvent and fought valiantly against budget cuts he felt "would be damaging to the school." Discussions of merging with St. Mary's University in San Antonio were raised again during his tenure, but Father Maguire was not in favor of this proposal and it once again fizzled out.
