Have you ever heard or saw something that just didn't seem right? What did you do? Do you wish you would have done something differently?
This class will help you learn how to use bystander intervention to recognize harm - in its many forms - and respond in a way that positively influences the outcome.
We will discuss how we all can play an active role in recognizing harmful situations among our students, in our workspaces, and in our personal lives. In this class, you will learn about the bystander effect, as well as a wide spectrum of harm that impacts students and members of our community including high-risk drinking, violence, sexual misconduct, mental health concerns, hazing, harassment, and many behaviors that may be expressions of racism, ableism, transphobia, and other forms of system oppression. We will also engage in a dialogue about interventions resources that are available both on and off campus.
Using the Hollaback! "5 D's of Bystander Intervention" (Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, Document), you will learn how to empower yourself to take action when you see or hear harm in our community.
