Founder of Free School
Free School was created by Patrick Veerkamp, Professor Emeritus of Art, in the summer of 2000. His vision was to provide a way for staff and faculty to share their talents with others in a fun, community-building atmosphere.
There are no exams, grades, or registration fees! We focus on learning and building connections through a variety of subjects facilitated by our volunteer instructors. We are completely donation based with an annual budget of $500 from the Staff Support Fund.
Participation is open to all Southwestern University faculty, staff, retirees, alumni, and current students. Classes have been held every summer other then 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Free School is run by the Staff Steering Committee.

The Staff Steering Committee (SSC) is made up of twelve elected currently employed Southwestern University staff from the following divisions: Academic Support, Facilities Management, Student Life, and University Operations. Each elected member serves a term of 3 academic years.
Additional committee members (voice, no vote) include an Administrative Liaison (Associate Vice President for Human Resources), a Student Liaison (Student Government Association), and two Ex Officio Retirees.
One of the committee's goals is to assist with the offering and coordination of staff development.
El Comité Directivo del Personal (SSC) está compuesto por doce miembros del personal electos actualmente empleados de Southwestern University de las siguientes divisiones: 'Academic Support, Facilities Management, Student Life, and University Operations.' Cada miembro electo cumple un mandato de tres años académicos.
Los miembros adicionales del comité (con voz, sin voto) incluyen un Enlace Administrativo (Vicepresidente Asociado de Recursos Humanos), un Enlace Estudiantil (Asociación de Gobierno Estudiantil) y dos Jubilados Ex Oficio.
