Beekeeping 101: Hands on the Hives

Course Title: Beekeeping 101: Hands on the Hives

Course Description: Whether you’re just bee-curious or are thinking about starting your own hives, the best way to get involved with beekeeping is hands-on! Participants will meet in the classroom to discuss basics of beekeeping, what to look for in a hive check, and a little background of our beekeeping student organization, BEE-Co (Beekeeping Education and Engagement Community). Next, we’ll head out to the apiary on the EcoLab (1 mile east of campus, off Smith Creek Road) to get up close and personal with the bees! You’ll be outfitted with our brand new suits and gloves, and we'll go through one or two beehives together at a beginner level. The goal of this class is to hopefully pique some interest in bees and beekeeping, grow your knowledge on pollinators’ importance, and to instill some life-long pollinator-focused sustainability practices in Southwestern community members. Come armed with all your burning bee questions, and we hope to see you at the bee yard!
