These formats allow designers, engineers and manufacturers to exchange accurate technical data for purposes such as modelling, rendering, simulation, and 3D printing.
Understanding technical file types such as STL, DWG, DXF, VRML, and 3DS is essential in Graphic Communication, as each format serves a specific purpose depending on whether the file is being used for design development, manufacturing, visualisation, or cross-platform compatibility.

Standard Tessellation Language (STL)
STL is a file format commonly used in 3D printing and additive manufacturing. It is the standard file type used when preparing a CAD model for physical production. Before a 3D model can be printed, it must be converted into a format that the 3D printer can understand. STL files do this by converting the CAD model into a mesh of small triangular surfaces, which describe the shape of the object. The model is then sliced into layers, allowing the printer to build the object layer by layer. STL is used when a design is ready to move from digital modelling to physical manufacture, particularly for prototyping, product development, engineering components, and model making.
Advantages
- Industry standard for 3D printing, widely supported by printers and slicing software
- Simple format focused on geometry only, making it reliable for manufacturing
- Compatible with most additive manufacturing systems
Disadvantages
- Stores surface geometry only (no colour, material or texture data)
- Does not contain design history or editable features
- Complex curved surfaces may require a high number of triangles, increasing file size

DWG is the native file format used by AutoCAD and other CAD software. It is one of the most widely used file types for 2D and 3D technical drawings in architecture, engineering and construction.A DWG file stores detailed design information, including:

- Layers and layouts
- Images and reference data
Advantages

Disadvantages
- Version compatibility issues – older software cannot open newer DWG files

DXF is a CAD file format used to exchange drawing data between different software programs. It contains vector-based design information, including lines, shapes, dimensions and layers.DXF was originally developed by Autodesk to allow AutoCAD drawings to be shared with other CAD applications. DXF is designed specifically as a cross-platform exchange format, making it more widely compatible with different software systems.DXF files are commonly used when a designer needs to transfer 2D drawings or simple 3D data between different CAD programs, CNC machines, or laser cutters.
Advantages
- Highly compatible with many CAD and manufacturing software systems
- Ideal for sharing and transferring technical drawings
- Stores vector data accurately for precise manufacturing
Disadvantages
- Does not always retain all advanced features found in DWG files
- Can result in large file sizes
- Less suitable for complex 3D modelling compared to native CAD formats

VRML is a file format used to display interactive 3D models on websites. It allows 3D objects to be viewed and manipulated within a web browser, making it suitable for online visualisation. VRML files can contain information such as 3D geometry, textures, lighting, animation and sound. They are designed to allow user interaction, meaning the viewer can rotate, zoom, and explore a model from different angles. VRML is particularly useful for online product visualisation and customisation, such as allowing customers to change colours, materials or features of a product before purchasing. This makes it valuable in industries such as retail, architecture, gaming and virtual environments.

- Can include animation, lighting and sound
- Useful for visualisation and virtual environments
Disadvantages
- Requires compatible browsers or plug-ins
- Large file sizes can affect loading speed
- Less commonly used today compared to newer web-based 3D technologies
3D Studio File Format (3DS)

3DS is a file format originally developed for use with Autodesk 3ds Max, a 3D modelling, animation and rendering software package. The 3DS format is commonly used to transfer 3D models between different software programs or to store models in 3D CAD libraries. It retains essential data such as geometry, textures and basic lighting information, making it suitable for sharing models across platforms.3DS format is designed mainly for exporting and exchanging models, rather than preserving full project information.
Advantages

- Compatible with many 3D modelling and rendering programs
- Useful for asset libraries and model sharing
Disadvantages
- Does not retain all advanced scene information
- Limited compared to modern 3D file formats
