Transitions are the techniques used to move smoothly from one scene or clip to the next in film, video, and animation. They’re an essential part of post-production, the editing stage, after filming or animating is complete. Transitions can be quick and straightforward, like a straight cut, or more stylised, like a fade, dissolve, wipe, or even a 3D digital effect. Each type of transition can change a sequence's mood, pacing, or meaning.
Used well, transitions help a video flow more naturally, guide the viewer’s attention, and enhance the overall storytelling. Whether switching between two locations, dramatically ending a scene, or linking moments in a montage, transitions are the glue that holds your visual story together.
