JPEG allows for subtle changes in colour and tone as each pixel can be a different colour
JPEG is a raster graphic which creates rich and detailed images
Compression of JPEG files reduces their size and the webpage will load more quickly
Compressed JPEG images will still give required quality whilst still being used for webpages if above 72 dpi
File compression allows transferability between devices
JPEGs are compatible with multiple devices
JPEG can be opened and accessed on a variety of software

vrml allows the user to interact with the graphic, for example rotate to see all features and angles
vrml allows zoom to see all detailed features
vrml allows customisation/ customer choice/change of colours/materials/textures/ lighting/(even) animating features so that the user can see an accurate mock-up of what their final design will look like

A design for a sustainable shopping bag made from canvas is shown. The logo on the bag is screen printed.a. Explain, giving three reasons, why the dwg file format is suitable for production of the logo. (3 marks)

DWG is a vector graphic which means the logo is scalable without pixleation
The accuracy of DWG vector allows for the logo to remain crisp/clear once laser cut
DWG can be converted easily to enable CAM production
DWG files can be easily edited
DWG files could be used make the laser cut screens and stencils accurate

Question 3

A travel company is producing a series of retro posters to celebrate their upcoming anniversary event. To further promote the event, a series of social media adverts will be produced using the 3gp file format.a. Explain, giving two reasons, why 3gp is a suitable choice of file format. (2 marks)To ensure the production of the posters remained on track, the company and the graphic designer created a Gantt chart.b. Describe two ways a Gantt chart would be used to ensure the project remains on track. (2 marks)

a. This is an explain question so there should be evidence of ‘cause’ and ‘effect’.

It is a commonly used file type which means it can be accessed across mobile devices
It has a low file size ensures quick load tile without delaying quality of playback
Compatible on many devices which allows for easy sharing and distribution

Setting of key deadlines so that all creators know when work must be finished
Intermediate targets can be set to establish key activities that must be completed within the main tasks
Resources can be planned for allocation at key points of the project
Deployment of human resources can be planned for key stages
Communication with client can be factored for review of progress/ work

Question 4

The company logo ‘#movbots’ will be used on a range of print and digital based media.a. Explain, giving two reasons, why the .ai file type was used in the production of the logo. (2 marks)b. Describe two features of this logo that would be complex to reproduce using vector software. (2 marks)

Answers

Vector files are easy to edit using DTP software
Scaling parts of the logo will not reduce quality of shape/curve/line definition/resolution
It embeds colour info and type face into a single file
It can be saved as another vector file type or as a pdf
Vector file format allows for precise modifications of curves

The gradient fill would be complex to reproduce using vector graphics, as gradients are usually controlled by pixels. Using vector software would require the designer to significantly alter the change between each individual shape to create the gradient
Drop shadow is also typically controlled by pixels in a raster image making it difficult to reproduce as vector

Question 5

A company produces 3D printed models and rendered illustrations for architects, structural engineers and model makers.The company does not accept STEP files for 3D printed models. Customers have to submit STL files.a. Explain, giving two reasons, why STEP files must be converted to STL files for 3D printing. (2 marks)b. Explain how each piece of information listed could be used to ensure the success of a 3D print. (3 marks)

Answers

STL files are the standard in 3D printing which ensures the 3D printer can easily read the data specific to the model.
STL files splice the model into several printable layers for accurate printing.
STL files can enable identification of weak points in the print, so structural meshes can be added to strengthen the model.
STL files will provide all of the required details for volume, mass surface geometry etc. to ensure the model can be printed accurately.
Retains only the essential 3D geometric data required by the printer

b.Volume

Volume data ensures the model being printed fits in volume inside the 3D printer.
Volume data can be used to check if there is sufficient print filament available.

Centre of Mass

Areas of greater mass can be supported to prevent collapse.
Can be used to determine centre of gravity/where the model is unstable so it can be supported during printing.
Determines the distribution of mass within a model indicating the areas of greater rigidity or strength, including supporting its own weight.

Model Mass

Can provide details on the quantity of material required for the build, which can help with costings and reducing material waste.
