Graphic media file types are different digital formats used to create, store, and share visual information. Each file type is designed for a specific purpose, such as editing, printing, or on-screen display, and choosing the correct format is essential to ensure image quality, compatibility, and efficient file size.
In Graphic Communication, designers must understand the strengths and limitations of common file types used in industry, including JPEG, PNG, BMP, PDF, AI, and EPS. Using the correct file type helps ensure that graphics display correctly, print accurately, and meet professional production standards.

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPG)
JPEG is a raster file type commonly used for storing and sharing digital images. It is one of the most widely used file types for photographs and web images. JPEG compression is based on how the human eye perceives colour and detail. Because the eye is less sensitive to subtle colour changes and fine brightness detail, this information can be reduced or removed to reduce file size. While this greatly reduces storage and transfer time, it also results in a loss of image quality, especially at high compression levels. JPEG files support full colour but do not support transparency.
Advantages
- Small file sizes due to high compression, making files easy to store and share
- Supports millions of colours, making it ideal for photographs
- Widely supported across web browsers, devices and software
- Suitable for photos, graphic artwork and web images
Disadvantages
- JPEG uses compression that permanently removes some image data to reduce file size.
- Quality reduces each time the file is re-saved
- Not suitable for sharp edges, text, or line drawings, which can appear blurred
- Does not support transparency

PNG are a raster file type. PNG files were developed as an improvement on GIF, providing better image quality and more advanced transparency while remaining suitable for web and on-screen use. PNG uses compression that does not permanently remove image data, meaning image quality is preserved even after editing and re-saving. PNG files are particularly effective for images that contain sharp edges, text, logos, or flat colour areas. There are different types of PNG files:
- PNG-8 supports a limited colour range and simple (on/off) transparency
- PNG-24 and PNG-32 support millions of colours and variable transparency levels, allowing smooth edges and fade effects
Advantages
- No loss of image quality when edited or re-saved
- Supports advanced transparency with multiple levels of opacity
- Produces clean, sharp edges, ideal for logos and graphics
- Widely supported across browsers and software
Disadvantages
- Larger file sizes than JPEG, especially for photographs
- Not suitable for animation
- Less efficient than JPEG for full-colour photographic images
Bitmap Image File (BMP)
Bitmap Image File (BMP)
BMP is a raster image file format originally developed for Windows, but is now supported on both Windows and Mac platforms. BMP files store colour information for every individual pixel in an image, usually with little or no compression. This means the image retains its original quality, but it also results in very large file sizes. Unlike formats such as JPEG or PNG, BMP files do not significantly reduce file size, which makes them unsuitable for web use.
Advantages
- No loss of image quality, as pixel data is preserved
- Widely supported
- Suitable for simple images, icons, and system graphics
Disadvantages
- Very large file sizes, making storage and sharing inefficient
- Not suitable for web use
- Lacks advanced features such as transparency or compression control
Portable Document Format (PDF)

PDF is a file format for reliably presenting and sharing documents, regardless of the software, hardware, or operating system used. PDF files are designed to preserve layout, fonts, images and colour exactly as intended. They can also include interactive features such as hyperlinks, buttons, form fields, audio and video content. PDFs can be password-protected, restricted, or digitally signed, and can be easily viewed with free software.
Advantages
- Universal compatibility across devices and operating systems
- Compact file size, with the ability to compress large documents
- Self-contained, with fonts and images embedded
- Can be secured using passwords or usage restrictions
- Ideal for commercial printing and final document delivery
Disadvantages
- Quality depends on how the PDF is created
- Scanned PDFs are image-based and cannot be edited easily, unlike native PDFs created digitally
Adobe Illustrator File (Ai)

AI is a vector graphics file format created and used by Adobe Illustrator. It is the native file format for Illustrator and is commonly used for creating logos, illustrations, icons, and graphic layouts. AI files store artwork as vector data, meaning images are created using mathematical paths rather than pixels. This allows designs to be scaled to any size without losing quality. Modern AI files are based on PDF technology, which helps maintain compatibility with other professional software.
Advantages
- Scalable with no loss of quality, ideal for logos and branding
- Produces high-quality, precise graphics
- Supports layers, editable paths, and typography
- Suitable for professional print and digital workflows
Disadvantages
- requires specialist software such as Adobe Illustrator to open and edit
- Not suitable for photographs or raster-based images
- File sizes can be large for complex illustrations
Encapsulated Postscript (ESP)

EPS is a vector-based file format used to import and export graphics between different software and platforms. It is based on the PostScript page description language and is commonly used in professional printing workflows. An EPS file usually contains a single page illustration and can include a combination of vector graphics, text, and raster images. EPS files may also include a low-resolution preview image, allowing software that cannot directly read PostScript to display a basic representation of the graphic. EPS is often used to transfer artwork such as logos, diagrams, and illustrations between different design applications and printing systems.
Advantages
- Cross-platform compatibility, usable on both Mac and Windows systems
- Vector-based, allowing graphics to be scaled without loss of quality
- Container format, meaning a single file can include text, vector artwork, and images
- Widely supported by professional print software
Disadvantages
- requires specialist software to edit correctly
- Limited support for modern features such as transparency and layers
- File must often be converted to another format for use in non-professional or web-based applications
