FEA and CFD simulations for the roller coaster are shown. a.Describe two ways that FEA and two ways that CFD simulations could be used to support the design of the rollercoaster.(4 marks)
Answers
a. FEA:
FEA can be used to test the stress of the structure under variable loads
FEA can assess at which point the design will fail and determine where supports/structural improvements are required
FEA can test a range of materials to determine which is best for the design
FEA can determine the details of the joining/assembly methods
CFD:
CFD can test the aerodynamics of the ride to reduce drag on riders
CFD can determine if riders are exposed to too much G Force
CFD can test the aerodynamics of the carriage to improve performance
CFD can test how the structure will react under different weather conditions, such as high winds
Question 2
A design company produces 3D-printed replacement components. The company uses digital testing methods to test designs before 3D printing. a.Describe two ways a designer could use FEA testing methods in the design of components.(2 marks)The company have been asked to 3D print a replacement pipe used in chemical processing.
b.Describe two ways a CFD test could be used to ensure the replacement pipe performs like the original.(2 marks)
Answers
a.
Components can be checked to ensure they do not fail under specific loads/forces
Different materials can be tested to assess the best option for the component
Strengthening supports can be added as required (eg webs, bosses, ribs, etc.)
New component must withstand other environmental conditions. E.g. heat, humidity, etc.
b.
It can ensure the new 3D printed pipe does not degrade due to the chemicals
CFD ensures the new pipe does not contaminate the chemicals
It will ensure the exact same dimensions of the pipe as the original
CFD will ensure the same surface finish of the pipe (interior) is the same
You can check that the same flow (characteristics) as the original pipe
The new pipe must withstand the environmental conditions. eg heat, humidity, etc.
Question 3
During the design phase of the fan and casing the company carries out digital testing by simulating the cooling of internal components.a.Describe what changes might be made to the design as a result of this digital testing method. (2 marks)
Answers
a.
You could change the position for the fan to ensure effective distribution cooling for components.
You could change the position or size of air vents to allow for natural cooling/effective air flow.
Decide the best positions for other components within the design to avoid overheating/effective cooling
Change the speed of the fan.
Change the material of a component to improve cooling/heat dissipation
