Computer Aided Manufacture Questions

Below are questions to test your knowledge and understanding of CAM.

Question 1

A design company produces 3D printed replacement components. Set-up requirements are needed to prepare a 3D model for printing.a. Describe four set-up requirements that are necessary to produce a successful 3D printed model. (4 marks)b. Describe two ways of reducing the environmental impact of 3D printing. Do not refer to energy efficiency or renewable energy sources in your response. (2 marks)

Answers

Convert the model to an STL file
Scale the model to ensure the volume of the print matches the volume available within the printer
Setup any structural/support requirements ie adding meshes to strengthen walls or stop the model collapsing in on itself
Ensure the models centre of mass is balanced correctly to avoid it toppling
Ensure the correct surface finish/print speed is selected to achieve the desired result
Model must be orientated/ manipulated correctly (to minimise scaffolding etc...)
Ensure the correct filament is used for the print
Ensure the temperature for the bed is correct for adherence
Ensure the correct temperature for the choice of filament
Selecting the correct path for laying down the filament
Model mass to ensure correct amount of filament is used

Print material from a recycled/sustainable source
Print material can be recycled
Minimal print material while maintain strength/rigidity
Choice of print time appropriate for function/surface finish (eg an early prototype may not require a high-quality finish)

Question 2

A company produces custom computer casings and components for computer enthusiasts.Components such as side panels are manufactured using laser cutting. The company has to convert models to technical file formats to do this.a. State the name of a suitable technical graphic file format used for laser cutting and explain two reasons why it is appropriate for the production of a side panel. (3 marks)

Answers

File Type DXF (1 mark)
Allows for accurate data transfer from the CAD drawing to the CAM process.
DXF files are widely compatible across a range of graphics software.
DXF files are easily editable/scalable allowing the graphics to be amended if the output is not as desired.
It is a vector file, so line quality maintained when scaled.
Lines can be selected, rather than individual pixels so editing/changing colours is easier.
