ALERT - 22-Story Tower Planned for 201 Shadow Mountain Drive

Post date: May 18, 2016 1:46:32 AM

Our neighbors with Upper Mesa Hills N.A. asked us to share the following:

The proposed tower by Meyer Group out of Miami would have 200-plus luxury hotel units, 200-plus luxury condo units, and a 715-car parking garage. The neighborhood associations on the west side feel this only adds traffic insult to injury as we contend for the next five to seven years with an over-saturated Mesa Drive and an under-construction I-10. We are also very worried about the schools along the route. No traffic mitigation measures are planned except for the extension by two blocks of Pebble Beach, a mere band-aid if that. Accordingly the next three issues of El Paso, Inc. will contain an ad opposing this skyscraper (the tallest in El Paso), an insert with the email addresses of City Council members, and an online site (tinyurl.com/fightthehighrise) at which opponents may sign an on-line petition (which already has nearly 200 signatures).

The rezoning of the vacant property will be introduced May 31 in City Council. On June 8 at 6 PM at the Westside Regional Command Center, 4801 Osborne Dr., a meeting will be held by Swarzbein and Niland, the developer and his supporters, and residents opposed. We need to load that room to have any input. Tentatively the rezoning will be voted upon by the Council on June 28.

You may want your Association to know these facts and be able to express their opinion through the above website petition. If you have any questions, please call Stephan Sample at 584-3631 or Pat Rhodes, Mountain Arroyos N.A., or Charlie Stapler, Coordinator of the Westside Associations at 833-1406.

We feel the City is irresponsible to superimpose another 500 to 1000 cars on the Mesa Drive corridor and this is our only chance to try to prevent that.
