How To Give a Poodle a Haircut With Clippers

There is one type of Poodle haircut where about 90% of the cutting is done with clippers. I like to refer to this as the "Where did my Poodle go? clip". This clip is sometimes referred to as a shave down or summer cut and is the cut professional groomers normally give to poodles who won't be shown.

With this very short clip, clippers are used everywhere except for the top of the head (also called the topknot) where scissors are used.

-- DON’T BURN YOUR DOG WITH THE CLIPPERS – When using clippers, the blades can get hot. Keeping a plastic clipper guide attached and/or periodically feeling the blades can help prevent burns. I have more information about clippers right here..

HAIRCUT STEPS:

-- Brush the dog.

-- Attach the #1 (shortest) clipper guide or no clipper guide.

-- Trim the face/snout of the dog. Hold your dog's snout firmly closed with your hand while you trim.

-- Trim the dog's bottom and feet

-- Attach a longer clipper guide (#2 3 4 5 6 7 8 depending on how short you want hair)

The longer you cut the hair, the more important it is to have sharp clipper blades. In general, it is more difficult to cut with the longer guides.

-- Trim the rest of the dog but not the top of the head. Be sure to trim the side of the head under the ears.

-- Trim the top of the head (also called the topknot) with scissors.

-- Touch up with scissors.

-- If needed pull hair from the inside of ears.
