HOME REMEDIES FOR DOGS WITH WORMS

Home Remedies For Dog Worms - How To Get Rid Of Worms In Dogs

Dogs are scavengers and often eat junk from the ground including animal feces (poop). They can get several different types of worms from doing this (commonly roundworm, tapeworm, whipworm, hookworm). They can also get tapeworm from eating a flea that contains a tapeworm egg. Dogs can also get worms from eating raw meat and fish. Worms can be passed on from mother to puppies. Deworming the mother with conventional medicine will NOT protect the puppies from all worm infections.

Fortunately, worms seldom cause much inconvenience or serious problem for adult dogs (according to the ASPCS Complete Dog Care Manual - also according to the Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook - also according to my Vet). However, many of the worms that can be hosted by dogs can be a potential health hazard for people. Worms can be more serious in puppies and unhealthy or stressed dogs. Most dogs carry round worms as encrusted larva. Conventional worm medications will only cure worms when they are in the intestinal phase and will not get rid of encrusted larva. Because you can’t kill the encrusted larva, you can’t ever be sure that a dog won’t develop worms. Because of the encrusted larva, regular deworming with conventional medication is a questionable practice.

Fortunately, there are some home remedies that can in many cases, safely and effectively get rid of worms in dogs.

Some home remedies that have worked to get rid of worms in my own dog include the following:

- Pumpkin with the pumpkin seeds - The seeds can be whole or chopped up. Pumpkin seeds contain a chemical that helps get rid of worms.

- Mint - Chop the mint up.

- Vegetables – Chopped up carrots, Swiss chard, and other vegetables. Raw vegetables work the best for getting rid of worms. However it is healthy for dogs to also eat cooked vegetables and is probably best if they eat some raw and some cooked vegetables. My dog loves cut up bits of raw carrots so I now feed them to her almost every day.

- Garlic – a small quantity can be added to the dogs food – don’t use too much because it can irritate the dog’s stomach.

I’m not sure which one of these actually cured my dog – I administered all of these to my dog when she had tape worms in her stool (poop).

I noticed she had tapeworms in her stool for several days in a row. I then researched home remedies and did the following:

It was near Halloween and time to carve our pumpkin – Tofu loves pumpkin - So we carved the pumpkin and fed her lots of the inside of the pumpkin along with the seeds.

I chopped up lots of Swiss chard, mint, and other raw vegetables. I then mixed this with some chicken and chicken fat, added a little garlic, and fed this to her. She loved it!

This seemed to clear up the worms. Not long after this we went to the vet for Tofu’s annual checkup and discussed Tofu’s worms – My vet also thought she was cured and agreed with my research – so I am sharing it with you!

I haven’t seen any worms in her poop since then. I occasionally feed her pumpkin when we have it available and also feed her more other vegetables (especially carrots which she loves). This is done as a preventative measure in case she has picked up new worms or encrusted larva have entered the intestinal phase. Like conventional medications, home remedies will probably only cure worms when they are in the intestinal phase and will not get rid of encrusted larva. However, unlike conventional medications, vegetables and pumpkin are healthy for dogs even if they don’t have worms.

OVER THE COUNTER DOG WORM MEDICINE

While these aren't technically a home remedy, an over the counter dog dewormer can be very effective when used properly.

There are many worm medications / dog dewormers available that you can purchase over the counter. Some of these only work for certain types of worms so you want to be sure you are purchasing medication to treat your dog's problem. If you are unsure, please consult you vet.

Here is our page about over the counter Dog Worm Medicine - Dewormer For Dogs

OTHER HOME REMEDIES FOR DOG WORMS – I haven’t tried these with my dog, but others claim these work. Use at your own risk.

Grass – dogs already know this home remedy. When dogs stomachs feel upset, they will often eat grass. Some people suggest adding some grass to the dogs food. Adding raw vegetables to the dog’s food would have a similar effect. (I would not add grass to my own dog's food, but instead would add raw vegetables such as carrots, Swiss chard and mint)

Wheat Germ Oil - 1 teaspoon of wheat germ oil added to your dog's food for a few days.

Fennel: Can help in expulsion of tapeworm parasites from the intestines. Also strengthens the immune system of dogs.

Parsley: Chop up parsley and add to food.

Oregon Grape Tincture: A few drops of Oregon grape tincture on the dog's food could help in getting rid of canine worms.

Cayenne Pepper: Small quantities of dried cayenne pepper powder mixed with the dog's food may help eliminate the tapeworms and also prevent infections in future.

Cat's Claw: Cat's Claw cleanses the intestines and has antioxidant properties.

Peppermint and Cinnamon: A mixture of peppermint and cinnamon in small quantities can help eliminate worms.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth: Mix a very small quantity of edible diatomaceous earth (that are specially meant for pets) in your dog's food for a few days

Dirt – Dogs sometimes eat dirt. This can help get rid of worms. Dogs also can get some minerals from the soil from eating dirt. However, dogs can also get worms from eating dirt because the worm larva can live for long periods of time in dirt and sand. For this reason, never let your dog poop in children's sand boxes or the sand under children's swings and play sets.

Grease – some claim feeding the dog grease will flush out worms.

Cloves: Cloves or clove powder in small quantities to your dog may help in getting rid of worms.

Wormwood: One part of wormwood oil mixed with eight parts of olive oil. (Wormwood is a very powerful ingredient that can cause seizures - I would NOT use this on my own dog)

Using conventional over the counter worm medications is much safer than wormwood.

Neem: Small quantities of neem powder mixed in the dog's food may help in eliminating worms

Herb of Grace: Including limited quantities of herb of grace in your dog's food can help in protecting him from intestinal worm infections.

Other Remedies:

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties. and might be beneficial in getting rid of tapeworms.

Grated carrots

Papaya leaves

powder of black walnut hulls.
