Dog Bath - More Information

Bathing your dog can help with dog itching in many different ways however - There can be too much of a good thing - DON’T BATHE WITH TOO MUCH SHAMPOO – Using harsh shampoo or too much shampoo dries the skin and can cause irritation. Dry skin can increase the itch and irritation flea bites and allergens cause

I basically discuss 2 different types of bath on my website - both types of baths can help remove allergens.

BATH TYPE 1 - Irritation soothing bath / soak / rinse

This is for soothing irritation - This is an epsom salt, sea salt, or ocean water bath or rinse.

I discuss the itch irritation soothing bath at the beginning of my article Home Remedies For Dog Itch – THE MIRACLE CURE FOR ITCHY DOGS! (A Comprehensive Guide)

A salt water bath can help sooth a dog's itchy skin and a salt bath may even help get rid of fleas - The salt bath dehydrates the fleas and may kill the fleas (please note: I have not personally verified that a salt bath kills fleas, but have read this from some other sources. I have personally verified that a salt bath can help relieve dog itching.)

I also discuss this type of bath on the following pages: Epsom Salt Bath For Dogs and Ocean Water Bath For Dogs and Salt Water Bath For Dogs

BATH TYPE 2 - Dog flea and mite bath

This type of bath is for killing fleas and mites by combining a few drops of cooking oil with a little dog shampoo.

I discuss the flea and mite bath in my article HOME REMEDIES FOR DOGS WITH FLEAS and BATHING YOUR DOG FOR HEALTHY SKIN and towards the end of the article Home Remedies For Dog Itch – THE MIRACLE CURE FOR ITCHY DOGS! (A Comprehensive Guide)

What if your dog has both irritation and fleas and needs the help from both types of baths??

Often dogs do have both irritation and fleas - Most often, itching is from a COMBINATION OF DRY SKIN, FLEAS, ALLERGENS, and IRRITATION. The dog has dry skin, allergens get on the dog, a flea bites, and then the skin gets irritated.

In the case where the dog needs the benefits from both types of baths, I often will just wash the irritated part of the dog with epsom salt mixed in a separate container. Then I proceed to wash the dog in the way I describe in BATHING YOUR DOG FOR HEALTHY SKIN

While a salt water bath can help sooth a dog's itchy skin and a salt bath may even help get rid of fleas I think the flea shampoo with a few drops of cooking oil may be more effective at killing fleas. (please note: I have not personally verified that a salt bath kills fleas, but have read this from some other sources. I have personally verified that a salt bath can help relieve dog itching.)
