Clippers

In general: clippers are used on the very short/shaved parts and scissors are used for the longer parts.

Beginners often assume that clippers are used to give the entire poodle haircut -- this is a big mistake because clippers don't work very well for cutting hair to a longer length.

Clippers work great for shaving and cutting very short. Scissors work better for a longer cut.

Beginners often overlook the use of scissors. With scissors you don’t need to get out an extension cord and you don’t have the noise from the clippers and problems with dull clipper blades.

When using clippers, you should switch to scissors for any place where you want the hair longer then one inch. The #8 clipper attachment is for a depth of one inch and is the largest attachment that comes with most clippers. When cutting 1 inch or shorter, clippers work very well. Clippers make trimming the face, feet, and bottom easier and quicker. Clippers are needed to give a poodle a show clip like the continental and English saddle clips. With the show clips, the dog is shaved on certain parts of the body. . Clippers are used on the very short/shaved parts and scissors are used for the longer parts

Peoples misconception about how to, when to, and when NOT to use clippers is a big reason why so many people don't give their own poodle a haircut.

There is one type of Poodle haircut where most of the cutting is done with clippers I have an article about it right here:How To Give a Poodle a Haircut With Clippers

For instructions on all types of Poodle haircuts please refer to this article: How To Give a Poodle a Haircut – Do It Yourself Poodle Haircut Guide -- Poodle Grooming

Please remember:

-- DON’T BURN YOUR DOG WITH THE CLIPPERS – When using clippers, the blades can get hot. Keeping a plastic clipper guide attached and/or periodically feeling the blades can help prevent burns
