Dog Diarrhea Home Remedies

There are many causes of dog diarrhea. It can be a sign of a serious problem - If you feel it is serious, you should consult your vet.

During their lives, my dogs have all had some issues with diarrhea from time to time. Our dog Tofu developed a problem with this while she was being boarded at our vet's office and she was given a shot. The vet thought that stress was part of the cause.

While stress may have been part of the problem, over time we learned that a factor that would cause diarrhea was eating too much fat and meat and not enough starch and vegetables in her diet. In our dog Tofu, diarrhea can occur if she eats too much canned dog food or too many meat and fat table scraps and not enough starch and vegetables. To cure this it helps if she eats more dried dog food or if she is eating left over meat / fat that she also be given some bread, rice, or potato. Also, if she has some vegetables in her diet this seems to help.

More calcium in our dog's diet also seems to help reduce diarrhea problems. Good home sources of calcium include bones and egg shells.

Large beef bones with no pieces that can break off are generally the best type. (never let your dog chew chicken bones) If your dog has not chewed on bones before, it is a good idea to supervise them when they first try - Some dogs try to eat the whole bone or pieces of the bone while some are better at chewing on the bone. Please note that there is always some risk for a dog choking on any type of bone so use your best personal judgement.

Egg shells are an excellent source of calcium. You can just break up the whole egg shell and fry it and the rest of the egg together before you feed it to your dog.
