During the Civil War, Johnson Garey served as a private in the Union Army, and is shown (as Johnson Geary) on the roster of the 3rd Iowa Independent Light Artillery Battery (aka the Dubuque Battery), in the company commanded by Capt. Mortimer M. Hayden. The regiment itself was mustered into Federal service on 24 Sep 1861 at Dubuque, Iowa for a three-year enlistment, and was mustered out on 23 Oct 1865.

According to Johnson Garey’s military records, he enlisted on 21 Aug, 1861 in Floyd Co, IA, and was honorably discharged early (presumably for medical reasons) on 21 Dec 1863 at Little Rock, AR, when he subsequently reenlisted in the Veteran Corps (military reserve – partially disabled soldiers who performed light duty). He was mustered out on 23 Oct 1865 at Davenport, IA.
