MANITOU BEACH, Mich. —

Richard James Beach, age 85, of Manitou Beach passed away Monday, July 18, 2011, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility and under the care of Hospice of Lenawee.

He was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Adrian, to George Tiffney and Lena (White) Beach. On May 30, 1957, he married Liela Marie LaPlaunt, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 1988. On Feb. 17, 1996, he married Gloria Gaige-Hamann in Hillsdale, and she survives.

Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944-1945, during World War II. He attended North Rome Baptist Church. Richard retired from Wyman Gordon Corporation in Jackson where he was a machine repairman. Richard was a member of the Onsted American Legion Durkee-Seager Post #550 and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Camp 43 of Blissfield. He also was a member of the Onsted Kiwanis and the Moose and Eagles in Jackson. Richard loved animals and enjoyed traveling and dancing.

In addition to his wife, Gloria, he is survived by his children, James Beach of Manitou Beach, Bonnie (Dennis) Gwinnup of St. Charles, Ill., Danniel (Karen) Hamann of Adrian, Cindy Hamann of Jackson and Kevin (Sherry) Hamann of Napoleon; his granddaughters, Heidi Gwinnup and Kristin Betancourt of St. Charles, Ill.; a great-grandson, Alex Betancourt; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Steven Beach; and a son, Robert Osterhout.

Funeral services for Richard will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Adrian Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Home, with Pastor Fritz Kruse officiating. Burial will be at Maple Shade Cemetery in Onsted with full military rites conducted by the Onsted American Legion Durkee-Seager Post #550. Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Adrian Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Home.
