David Ingall

David Ingall’s Biography

David Ingall was born in Monroe, MI and lives in Temperance, MI. His interests focus on the Civil War, Michigan in the Civil War and General George Armstrong Custer. He has researched 25 relatives in the Civil War and the lives of many Monroe County Civil War soldiers. He served on the committee that recently dedicated the new Monroe County Civil War Fallen Monument at Monroe’s Soldiers & Sailors Park, and also as chairman of the monument dedication ceremony on May 27, 2012. He researched and wrote the booklet, Monroe’s Historic Woodland Cemetery, the “Camp Monroe” historical marker dedicated on July 4, 2014 and co-authored the book, Michigan Civil War Landmarks, published by History Press in April 2015.

Dave is a graduate of Western Michigan University and the past assistant director of the Monroe County Historical Museums. He is a member of the Monroe County Civil War Round Table, Nash-Hodges Camp #43 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Civil War Preservation Trust, Little Big Horn Associates, Custer Battlefield Historical and Museum Association, and Custer Battlefield Preservation Committee.

Dave's Great Great Grandfather was Private Andrew Sorter Co. K 15th Michigan Infantry. Born October 14, 1825 in Seneca County, New York. From Dundee MI, he enlisted on September 7, 1864 at Jackson for 1 year at age 39. He joined the regiment at Cave Springs, Georgia on November 1, 1864. They participated in "Sherman's March to the Sea" and the Carolina Campaign. Discharged at Washington D.C. May 30, 1865. Died November 30, 1884 and is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg, Michigan.

Dave's Great Great Great Great Uncle Private Riley Haines was in Company G, 9th Michigan Cavalry, as a Blacksmith. Born in 1840 from Pittsford, Hillsdale County he enlisted in Co G on March 7,1863 at Coldwater age 23. Captured December 23, 1863 at Dandridge, Tennessee. Died of disease at Andersonville Prison, Georgia, June 10, 1864. Buried in Andersonville National Cemetery, grave number 1813.

Dave's Great Great Great Great Uncle Private James Moulton was in Company C 21st Michigan Infantry. Born 1820 in Richland County Ohio. From Irving, Barry County he enlisted on August 9, 1862 at Hastings for 3 years age 42. Mustered September 3, 1862. Discharged for disability April 7, 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Re-enlisted January 15, 1864 at Grand Rapids, mustered January 20, 1864 joined regiment at Chattanooga, Tennessee May 9, 1864. Discharged at New York City May 27, 1865. Fought in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky and Stones River Tennessee. Participated in Sherman's March to the Sea and the Carolina Campaign. Died April 15, 1884. Buried in Irving Cemetery, Middleville, Michigan.

Dave's Great Great Great Great Uncle Private Luther G. Bradshaw Company A 108th New York Infantry Born 1839 in Irondequoit, New York. From Monroe County New York he enlisted on July21, 1862 at Rochester, NY age 23. Fought in the Battle of Antietam and seriously wounded in the back by a shell fragment while charging the Stone Wall at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. Discharged for disability on February 21, 1863 at Falmouth Virginia. Died 1907 in Parma, NY buried in Parma Corners Cemetery.

Dave's Great Great Great Uncle Sergeant Solomon Longsworth was in Company C. 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Born February 5, 1840 in Knox County Ohio. From Van Wert County Ohio Enlisted on July 20, 1861 at Mt. Vernon, Ohio age 21. Mustered August 31, 1861 at Camp Denison Promoted to Corporal January 18, 1864 and Sergeant March 18, 1864. Mustered out July 20, 1865 at Louisville Kentucky. Participated in the majority of the 32nd's battles; in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Vicksburg Campaign, Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea and the Carolina Campaign. Died October 18, 1869 in Spencerville, Ohio Buried in Wright Cemetery, Venedocia, Van Wert County Ohio.

Dave's Great Great Great Uncle Major Lewis F. Hake Company B. 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Born March 17, 1831 at Youngstown, Ohio. From Canton, Ohio Enlisted as first Lieutenant July 11, 1862 at Columbus for 3 years age 31. Mustered August 13, 1862 as Captain. Promoted to Major on February 8, 1865. Captured at Lavergne, Tennessee on December 5, 1864 by the Rebel General Nathan Bedford Forest and confined to Andersonville Prison Georgia. Paroled as a prisoner or war at Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 21, 1865 and survived the Sultana disaster on April 27, 1865. Died September 21, 1919 at the Ohio Soldiers Home in Sandusky, Ohio Buried in the Ohio Soldiers Home Cemetery.

Dave's Great Great Great Uncle Sergeant Joseph Totten Company G 4th Michigan Infantry. Born December 27, 1842 From Dundee Michigan he enlisted on June 20, 1861 at Adrian for 3 years age 18. Participated in the majority of the 4th's battles from the Penninsula Campaign through Petersburg, including Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Shepardstown, Fredericksburg, Wilderness and Spottsylvania. Mustered out at expiration of service at Detroit on June 30, 1864. Re-enlisted with the 30th Michigan Infantry Company G November 28, 1864 for 1 year age 22 Mustered December 31, 1864 Promoted to Sergeant January 9, 1865 Mustered out at Jackson, June 17, 1865. Died May 7, 1919 Buried in Church Corners Cemetery, Wheatland Township, Hillsdale County Michigan. was a member of GAR William Bell Post #10 Dundee Michigan.
