William served with Captain McKinney's Company from Sept. 1863 to March 15, 1864. He enlisted and mustered out as a Private, and served in various skirmishes in the Iron County area of southeast Missouri. The 6th Missouri Militia was a mounted infantry unit. Each man provided his own horse, and the US Government paid a bounty to each man of up to $100 for the use of the horse.
