Richmond (Jack) John Hope

1909-1977

Richmond [Jack] John Hope was born on 12 November 1909.

On 6 August 1927, he married Thelma Doris Garner (1907-1981)

Jack died in 1977. He and Thelma had 9 children.

"My father left home as a young man, after my mother died and took his brother Halbert with him. They both joined the Victoria Police Force as indeed grandfather Hope had done before them. My father resigned just after the depression but Uncle Halbert retired as I think a Superintendent. He is now deceased. His wife Lilly, had as far as I know 10 children. I am married with 2 children. My wife Jeanette Lillian Joyce nee Purcell. My eldest girl is Michele Elizabeth born 31.8.69. My youngest in Nicole Louise born 29.11.71. My 2 daughters are ballet teachers as indeed is my wife. Nicole was one of the youngest in Queensland to pass this exam and is now in the Brisbane Ballet Company."[1]

[1] Letter from Laurence Halbert Hope (early 1986)

Thelma Doris Hope (nee Garner) penned this poem which was only to be read after her death:

Some day I will have to leave you

So please don't shed a tear

Because I have had a very good life

Throughout my yesteryear

I have but nine children

Made up of 6 girls and 3 boys

Over which I have shed many a tear

But most times brought many joys

So please, my dear children

When I lay myself to rest

Just let life go on as it always did

Make it full of love, and jest

Someday I will look down upon you

And count all my precious stars

Even though the Gates of Heaven

Are as far away as Mars

The Lord will open His Golden Gate

And call "Thelma Doris come in"

I must tell Him that I have loved

Also that I committed sin

He will put me with His

band of Angels

And there I will want to stay

And I'll meet my beautiful Angel

My darling Thelma Mae

So all of my darling children

Please don't shed a tear

Even though I'll be so far away

I will always be so near

Regretably, I have no further information about the life and times of Jack Hope or his family.
