Euphemia (Effie) Grace Hope

1888-1921

Euphemia (Effie) Grace Hope was born 26 November 1888 at Edenhope, Victoria to Richmond Armstrong Hope and Isabella Edgar.

In 1919, she married Percy Albert Hugh Matheson, son of Donald Matheson and his wife Flora Annie McEachern and they had one daughter, Isabel.

Effie died at Casterton on 18 January 1921 aged 23 years.

Her husband, Percy Albert Hugh Matheson was born 23 May 1891 and died in Melbourne on 6 June 1973 of Consumption. Isabel was reared by Granny Hope after her mother's death, at Casterton. After Effie and Percy were married they lived in Northcote a Melbourne suburb, and as Effie died when their only child was 13 months old, it was a brief stay for them.

Percy Matheson had a lucky escape after W.W.I. On the way home their ship hit a mine and the bow was blown off. It seems he was in the water for 48 hours before being picked up. From Habby's childhood memory he can remember that Percy was really upset that he had lost all the gifts that he was bringing home for Effie and I suppose that as a child these things would imprint themselves more on your memory than the seriousness of the incident.[1]

Regretably, I have no further information about the life and times of Effie Hope or her family.
