Concert Introduction

Transcriptions are works that are modified from the original so that the music would work well on a different instrument. Most transcribers of Bach’s works focus on his organ repertoire, because those pieces are rarely heard in a concert hall and have great potential to bring new experiences to the audience and also to the performer. Part of that freshness comes from the expanded usage of the piano’s resources than what we have come to expect in Bach. Another part is to do with the nature of the music itself; as Bach’s organ music is much more closely tied to his faith, it becomes unavoidable to ask: how do we connect with Bach’s music if we don’t share his faith?

The concert’s programme includes selections from the Organ Mass, Organ Prelude and Fugue in C minor BWV 546, Unaccompanied Violin Sonata No.3 BWV 1005, and Organ Toccata and Fugue in D minor (“Dorian”) BWV 538. All of the transcriptions are made by Stephen Hung. The concert lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes with intermission.

音樂會簡介

巴哈的管風琴作品中包含許多鉅作，卻因為樂器及場地的限制而鮮為人知，於是有許多鋼琴家如李斯特（Liszt）和布梭尼（Busoni）等都會把巴哈的管風琴作品改編給鋼琴彈奏。這個做法，首先可以將管風琴音樂普及化，另外亦可以在編曲的過程讓巴哈的音樂更加善用現代鋼琴的優勢，用上更廣闊的音域、更多彩的音色，就像添加了一點浪漫派的光環，令音樂更容易入耳。與此同時，巴哈的管風琴音樂是完全圍繞著他的宗教信仰而寫的；雖然改編的過程可以令音樂更浪漫，但音樂的題材卻似乎跟我們現代社會的價值觀距離更遠。這矛盾是必然的嗎？如果跟巴哈沒有一樣的宗教信仰，那麼我們有其他方法去感受、欣賞他的音樂嗎？

音樂會的曲目包括：管風琴彌撒曲（選段）、C小調管風琴前奏與賦格曲（BWV 546）、第三首小提琴無伴奏奏鳴曲（BWV 1005）、D小調管風琴觸技與賦格曲《多利安》（BWV 538）。音樂會的樂曲都是由熊韋皓改編；節目長約2小時15分鐘，包括中場休息。

The Performer

Stephen Hung graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London. Apart from his piano studeis, he also received training on the harpsichord and organ. He is especially drawn to the music of J. S. Bach and previous performances include the complete 2-part and 3-part inventions, the complete WTC, a number of Jukebox concerts, and collaborative projects with the visual-artist Oychir. He has published a volume of his own Bach transcriptions in 2017; his other transcriptions and exercises for educational use are available on his website. 

演出者簡介

熊韋皓畢業於英國皇家音樂學院鋼琴系，並曾學習彈奏古鍵琴及管風琴。他特別熱衷於巴哈的音樂，曾於2022年演奏《平均律》全集。除了以傳統的方式表演，熊氏亦積極探索以其他形式把音樂帶給聽眾，例如是「巴哈點唱機」、在2018及2019年與視覺藝術家愛卡合作上演的《兔仔的圖象琴譜》、又或是2023年於同一場音樂會中演奏鋼琴及古鍵琴。另外，他於2017年出版了一套由自己改編的巴哈曲集，亦會編寫鋼琴教材上載到網站供大眾瀏覽。
