The Charm of Glenn Gould

Post date: Oct 25, 2016 11:5:53 PM

Glenn Gould’s playing carries a charm. On the surface, this was a pianist who set out specifically to find an interpretation that is distinctly different from everyone else—a pretentious act, by all accounts. Yet beneath that surface of pretention is a mind assured of its creativity and a heart that does not waver in its convictions. Overshadowed by the hilarious mannerisms—the chair, the singing, the posture, the nonsensical articulations—is something that is much more human, much more involved and committed than anything that has come after. Perhaps we should be reminded that this apparent emphasis of style over substance is also present in Bach’s music, which is always overshadowed by his obsession with contrapuntal techniques, yet we can always sense something profound seeping out almost subconsciously.

This concert seeks to re-capture Gould’s charm by copying his interpretations. The choice of the programme is on merit of his ability to transform Bach’s music, most notably in the 3rd violin sonata, but also in his unique compilation of the inventions.
