Bach's Complete Well-Tempered Clavier

The Complete Well-Tempered Clavier: 48 Preludes and Fugues

Due to the way it alternates between major and minor pieces, the Well-Tempered Clavier (WTC) can be seen as a representation of the ups and downs we experience in life. Listening to a whole book of WTC, we walk with Bach through his joys and sorrows and reflect on our own happiness and misfortunes.

Why walk with Bach though? Bach’s music speaks with a calming tone and helps us be in touch with our extreme emotions without being taken over. It is quite a different thing compared to Beethoven - the hero who calls us to arms and inspires us to fight on, whose 250th birthday we celebrated in 2020. Sometimes we need respite from these heroic struggles; as 2022 brings the 300th anniversary of the completion of WTC’s first book, perhaps this is an opportunity to experience Bach’s world of calmness. The two books of WTC are separated by twenty years, and listening to both of them can reveal how Bach himself moved on from an impassioned young man to become the wise master.

Each performance will run for about 2 hours 15 minutes, including intermission.
