The Art of Fugue

Post date: Jul 06, 2015 12:41:44 AM

The Art of Fugue is a unique example of Bach mining infinite riches from a little theme. Although fundamentally still a set of pieces drawing on different interpretations of a single theme, fugue-variation is unlike other forms of variation because it is free from the constraint of having a syntactically complete structure as its theme. Instead of looking inwards and teasing out microscopic details of a completed structure, the Art of Fugue develops outwards, manifesting the endless latent possibilities of its fugue subject. This will be contrasted in the concert with the more conventional but ever popular Chaconne in D minor, plus two newly made organ transcriptions.

Stephen Hung will give pre-concert talks on the Art of Fugue at Music Lab Education Studio on the 7th and 15th of August at 8pm and 7.30pm respectively. Places are limited; if interested please visit https://sites.google.com/site/shungbach/form to register. Payment is on a voluntary basis.
