EGR Valve Replacement or Cleaning

Difficulty: 1/5

Time to install: 30 mins

Tools Required: Phillips head screwdriver, 10mm sockets, throttle body cleaner (if cleaning the EGR Valve)

Replacement is all steps below. It is not common that the EGR Valve needs to be replaced, but it is common for them to be removed and cleaned, since the Miata typically builds up a lot of carbon deposits. This can lead to the EGR Valve sticking, so that it cannot open or close when required.

Unclip the harness from the EGR Sensor at the back of the intake manifold. The EGR valve is the big, rusty-looking piece!

Remove the two 10mm bolts that mount the EGR Valve to the back of the intake manifold.

Place the metal gasket in a safe place so it doesn't get damaged or bent. Looks pretty crusty!

To ensure the solenoid doesn't get damaged from any wayward chemicals, unscrew the 4 screws and separate the solenoid from the valve. You're ready to spray away! Periodically push in the spring to move the valve back and forth to clean off all of the carbon. Installation is the reverse steps!
