Mazda Crankshaft Angle Sensor Part Number: BP4W-18-221B

Lift the front of the car on ramps or jackstands, then remove the splash pan.

The lowest pulley on the engine is the crank pulley. Direcly to the right of it is the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS). It is black, plastic and about the size of a lipstick container.

Behind the crank pulley, is a thin black plate. If you look at its circumference, you'll notice nubs around it. There nubs are what the CAS sensor measures. The distance between the CAS and the nubs is supposed to be 0.020 and 0.059 inches! Basically, you want it close enough so that the spinning nubs don't hit the sensor, but if the sensor is too far away, it can't read the nubs and the car won't fire up. Most people don't have the tools to measure 0.020 to 0.059 inches, so they rely on the thickness of 2 credit cards

Remove the sensor by taking out the 10mm bolt.

At the top of the engine, you can see the sensor, and the wire harness lies just above the power steering module, which is the lower pulley setup on the right. Push the tab in, and you'll be able to remove the wiring. This pic will look a little different, but your harness will be in approximately the same area.

Plug your new sensor in, and safely route the wire so it is not damaged by moving belts. You can use zip ties to secure the wire if needed.

Replace the new sensor, securely hand tighten the 10mm bolt. Err on the side of caution, and ensure it won't hit the nubs. Too far is better than too close and hitting the sensor. With the car in Neutral, and the Emergency Brake on, attempt to start the car. If it fires up, the installation is good. If it fires and dies, it means the sensor is too far away. Lightly loosen the bolt, push it in closer, tighten and try again.

Once the engine fires up, you're good to go, and can replace the splash pan.
