BG 44k Treatment

Difficulty: 1/5

Time to install: 30 mins

Tools Required: 5/32" Vinyl tubing, C-Clamp, BG 44k

A few people on Miata.net mentioned BG 44K products, so I thought I'd try them. The BG 44K website has a special service for removing deposits in the engine. From a search, it seems as if it's not much more than allowing some of this Fuel Injection System cleaner in via the air intake to clean out oily sludge and carbon deposits. The only difficult part is trying to put in just enough to keep the car from stalling.

Do your research on it for reviews, I believe Seafoam basically works the same way. I was happy with it, not a huge difference, but it cleared up some idling and startup issues I was having.

BG 44k Fuel Injection System Cleaner. You'll want to drive the car around first to get it up to operating temperature. Despite that this says Fuel Injection Cleaner, this is not meant to be added to your gasoline like typical fuel injection cleaners. It travels through your intake manifold to clean out the deposits.

Parts needed:

    • BG 44K Fuel Injection System Cleaner

    • Vinyl Tubing (purchased from autoparts store for bleeding brakes 5/32")

    • C-Clamp

Attach one end of the vinyl hose to a vacuum port. You want to attach the hose as close to the original throttle body location as possible. If you have a supercharger, it should be connected after it so the fluid does not travel through the SC.

Place the other end inside the can of BG 44K. Use the C-Clamp to clamp down on the vinyl hose so no fluid can get through. Turn on the car and let it idle. Using the C-clamp was a really easy way to attenuate the amount of fluid going through to the intake manifold. Let the fluid slowly suck into the intake. If the engine begins to run a little rough, reduce or stop the amount of BG 44K going to the engine. Otherwise, the car will stall out. If the car does stall out, try and start it up again. It took me about 4 or 5 tries before the car would start up again and you'll probably get a blinking CEL. Anyway, I learned the lesson once, and paid better attention. It took about 20 or so minutes of idling to sip all 11oz of the fluid. Once complete, remove the hose and recap the vacuum port. Let the car sit for at least 15 minutes. I disconnected the battery to clear the CEL and then took the car out for a nice, spirited drive to burn off any leftover deposits.
