Subject: Request for Unpublished Data on Income Inequality and Subjective Well-Being

Dear colleagues, We are conducting a preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis on the relationship between economic inequality and subjective well-being or mental health outcomes, and we are looking for unpublished work that align with our criteria.

The PhD program in Life Course Research fosters the study of life courses and the significant events that shape them from a holistic and transdisciplinary perspective. The program establishes a Scientific Consortium between scholars from the biomedical, psychological, and socio-demographic fields.

Unique features of the PhD in Life Course Research are: 1) Thematic rather than disciplinary identity; 2) Super-departmental and super-regional nature to overcome the fragmentation of local approaches; 3) Multilevel teaching structure (national/local).

The deadline for applications is August 7.

We are happy to announce the release of the first Scientific Use File of the German Social Cohesion Panel (SCP): the German Social Cohesion Panel 2021 - Anchor Persons (SCP 2021_1 (Anchor)). The SCP is a newly established longitudinal study that captures multiple aspects of social cohesion in Germany. It is based on a representative population sample drawn from the German population registers and was carried out for the first time in 2021. The SCP 2021_1 (Anchor) includes initial survey data and generated indicators of 13.055 household anchor persons drawn from population registers and subsequently interviewed. Future datasets will be expanded to include household information and survey data of adult household members.

The SCP can be ordered by all post-doctoral researchers affiliated with a scientific institution. For that purpose, please set up a data user account at https://fgz-risc-data.de/en/registration . Account holders (primary users) may share the data with researchers under their supervision (secondary users). The Vered Kraus Travel Award
RC28 is pleased to announce the new establishment of the Vered Kraus Travel Award. The Vered Kraus travel award was established by the generous gift from Vered Kraus, her family and friends. The first recipient of the Vered Kraus travel award will be announced in the Spring 2023 RC28 Conference
Below are a few words on Verad Kraus by Yuval Yonay
Vered Kraus was born in Czechoslovakia in June 1946. Her parents survived the war by hiding, but both of them lost their parents in the last stages of the war. In 1949, the family moved to Israel to avoid life under communism and settled in a suburb of Haifa where Vered grew up. After completing a military service as a special education teacher, Vered studied education and sociology  (1967-1970) at the Haifa branch of the Hebrew University that has later become the University of Haifa. She first thought of becoming a special education teacher, but her mathematical and research skills were soon recognized by her professors who recruited her as a research assistant already as an undergraduate student. Vered immediately fell in love with quantitative research which she has never stopped doing until the very last months of her life. She earned her MA and Ph.D degrees in sociology at the Hebrew University in 1973 and 1977. Her Ph.D supervisors were Oser Schild and Robert W. Hodge, with whom she wrote her first book, Promises in the promised Land: Mobility and Inequality in Israel (Greenwood Press, 1990). Since 1977 until her retirement she was member of the Sociology Department at the University of Haifa. Her publications include also Secondary Breadwinners: Israeli Women in the Labor Force (Greenwood Press, 2002), Facing Barriers: Palestinian Women in a Jewish-Dominated Labor Market (co-authored with Yuval Yonay; Cambridge University Press), in addition to numerous papers on quantitative methodology, gender and ethnic inequality, gender, and other topics. Vered passed away in June 2022.

From Zoltán Lippényi (z.lippenyi@rug.nl), March 16:
Two fully-funded, 4-year Ph.D. positions are available at the University of Groningen  (Department of Sociology) within the Dutch Science Foundation VIDI-project "Beyond Boardrooms". A growing number of European countries adopt corporate quota’s to ensure an equal representation of women in leadership positions, but the broader impact of the policy on gender inequality in earnings and job careers is currently unknown. The research project uses novel linked employer-employee administrative data and surveys to map out multiple pathways (e.g., female representation in leadership, company diversity policies, and inter-organizational networks) of how the impact of quotas trickles down within organizations and spills over within the business community. The Ph.D. will also communicate the project results to governmental and corporate stakeholders and participate in the graduate training program offered by the Interuniversity Center of Social Science Theory & Methodology (ICS).

RC28 Newsletter, March 3, 2022

Today is the last day to submit an abstract for RC28 Summer Meeting in Ann Arbor!
Call for Papers: RC28 summer meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan hosted by the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics
The 2023 RC28 Summer Conference will take place on August 14-17, 2023 at the University of Michigan and will be hosted by the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics (CID). The conference theme is “Inequality, Mobility, and Equality.” As in other RC28 meetings, the broad thematic umbrella will accommodate submissions on the topic of inequality and mobility. The addition of “equality,” in turn, contains a thematic expansion. As a research community, we have typically avoided questions of equality – equality in what? equality between whom? etc. – as they are often regarded as the preserve of philosophy. At the same time, most RC28 members will readily agree that less inequality and more upward mobility would be “better.” This RC28 conference seeks to directly confront the often vague and implicit egalitarian commitment underlying much of our work by encouraging a more explicit consideration of what a more equal world would and could look like. We therefore also encourage submissions that situate their empirical findings on mobility and inequality within a broader discussion of equality and alternative visions of a more egalitarian society. The conference will also offer keynote lectures by eminent philosophers who work on these questions as well as other events around these themes, such as an interactive session that asks us to “envision real utopias” (following Erik O. Wright’s call). We will also have a guided bus tour through the city of Detroit led by local social scientists.
Submit your extended abstract by March 3rd (11.59pm US Eastern Time) here: https://www.inequalitydynamics.umich.edu/rc28/call/

The PhD position is part of a 5-year project funded by the Swiss national science foundation. The project is led by Prof. Per Block and focusses on understanding how individuals move between jobs and occupations over the life-course and between generations. The project uses statistical methods developed for the analysis of social networks to gain new insights into the social component of mobility. Conditions are excellent (including own research budget) and the surrounding is wonderful – more details below. The conceptual and methodological approach is briefly outlined in this paper: Analysing mobility tables as weighted networks. The approach will be applied to diverse areas during the project. One published example is occupational sex segregation.

Since 2012, the DAB Panel Study has collected data on the educational and occupational trajectories of more than 3,000 people born around 1998 in German-speaking Switzerland. The participating adolescents have been followed since their eighth year of school and have so far been interviewed about their educational and occupational trajectories as well as on other topics in ten waves.
Scientific use files for the first nine waves of the DAB panel study are now available to the research community and can be downloaded from SWISSUbase (Data Access: https://doi.org/10.48573/dqgk-ja58).
