                                                                    PAST MEETINGS: TRENTO AND UTAH

In 1992 the Research Committee convened in May in Trento, Italy, and in August in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both conferences were well attended and marked the continuous well-being of the RC. Summaries of the papers presented on these conferences are appended to this Newsletter. The RC Board wants to thank once again the respective organizers and supporting institutions for their important work. At the Trento conference, the RC commemorated the untimely death of its former board member Paolo Ammassari, just a few months before the Italian conference.

Site information: Trondheim, the third largest city in Norway, is located around 500 km north of Oslo. Founded in 997 A.D. by the Viking king Olav Trygvason, the city lies on a bend in the river on the edge of the Trondheim fjord. During the Middle Ages, Trondheim was the capital of Norway. The modern city dates back to 1681, when General Cicignon redesigned the city after a series of disasterous fires. The University of Trondheim consists of two main parts: The Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) and the College for the Arts and Sciences (AVH). In total there are now around 14,000 students at the University.

Transportation: Trondheim Airport‑Vaernes is located 40 kilometers north of Trondheim. There are frequent flights from Oslo to Trondheim and from Copenhagen, Denmark. Major carriers are SAS and Braathens SAFE. Ground transportation: There are bus departures for Trondheim immediately after each arrival (cost: NOK 40). The bus stops at the major hotels in the historic town center. The stop closest to the conference center is the Britannia Hotel (a 5 minutes walk from the conference centre). A taxi ride will cost approximately NOK 350.

Financial support: In addition to the support from the general RC funds (see elsewhere in this Newsletter), the Norwegian organizers are likely to be able to provide extra support for conference participaters, both for travel and accommodation. The amount will depend upon the final budget and the number of participants. The following categories qualify for support: (a) members from soft‑currency countries, (b) students, (c) RC members in special need. Application should be sent before the conference deadline to Ringdal together with the paper proposal and an itemized budget, including the amount you can pay from your own resources.

Site information: North Carolina is located in the Upper South of the United States, and stretches 500 miles from the Outer Banks on the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Smokie Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the USA. North Carolina is divided into three geographic regions.  The Atlantic coastal plane is flat, and subtropical in parts.  The mountainous western third of the state contains the highest peaks in the eastern half of the U.S.  The central Piedmont, where Durham is located, consists of rolling hills with pine and deciduous forests.  Durham, along with Chapel Hill (the location of the University of North Carolina), and Raleigh (the state capital) constitute the 'Triangle', and surround the Research Triangle Park, one of the largest high‑technology industrial and research sites in the country. Duke University itself occupies approximately 12,000 acres that include its two campuses, a major medical center, 35 acres of formal gardens, and the largest research forest of any university in the USA.

Transportation: The Raleigh‑Durham International Airport (RDU) is a hub of American airlines, with direct trans‑Atlantic service from Paris, and connecting flights from other European cities through JFK in New York. United, Delta, U.S. Air and other American carriers also fly into RDU. Duke is a 15 mile taxicab ride from the airport (the fare is about $25).

                                                                                                 RC28-DUES

For the new ISA period that started in 1992 after the Madrid World Conference the following RC Membership fees are due:

US $ 40regular RC membership fee (4 years).

US $ 10reduced RC membership fee (4 years) for members from soft currency and developing countries, students, and those who are unemployed or retired.

Members who joined after 1992, should pay the proportionate amount.

The RC membership fees are needed for (a) expenses associated with production and mailing of the Newsletter and communications among board members and (b) to subsidize travel of members from soft currency and developing countries to conferences. The applicable amount can be paid in one of the following ways:

‑Send a traveller's cheque (preferably in US Dollars) "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom";

‑For those with American bank accounts: send a personal cheque with the dollar amount "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom";

-Send a Eurocheque "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom", made out in Dutch guilders: Dfl. 68,=, and Dfl. 17,=, respectively.

‑Transfer the amount directly in any exchangeable currency to ABN-Amro Bank Account 5556 88 623 in the name of "H. Ganzeboom, ISA RC28, Netherlands". If you do this, make sure that it is clear on whose behalf the sum is paid.

As of the current Newsletter, membership of those that have not paid their dues for the present period is discontinued. A notice has been sent to all involved.

                                                                                                 EMAIL LIST

Email (electronic mail) is a convenient way of communication in the scientific community. The Secretary now maintains a list of approximately 150 addresses of RC members around the world. Addressants receive advance notice of dates and places of future conferences, and other urgent messages. If you have not received messages until now, but do have an email address, send a note about your whereabouts to U211500@HNYKUN11.URC.KUN.NL.

                                                                                                ABSTRACTS

For both the Trondheim and the Durham meetings, registration should be accompagnied by an abstract of your paper. The abstract should be no more than 200-300 words and include the following information:

-full names and address (including email address) where the paper can be obtained;

-exact title and reference of the paper;

-basic subject, research problems, hypotheses and conclusions;

-reference to the data used;

-data analysis technique applied.

Abstracts should be included in the final version of the paper and be brought on the (DOS) diskette to the conference. They will be published in a forthcoming Newsletter of the Research Committee.

                                                                    TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR RC-MEMBERS

The current financial situation of the RC allows for some limited support for members in need of travel funds to come to RC meetings. The following categories qualify for such support: (a) members from soft currency countries, (b) students, (c) RC members in special need. As a rule, support is given upto a maximum of US $ 500 and only once in a four-year period. The awarding of the support is contingent upon the quality of the paper contributed to the conference. Applications should be send at the earliest possible date to Harry Ganzeboom, Secretary of the RC and include the paper proposal and an itemized budget, as well as to the organizer of the conference.

                                                                WORLD CONGRESS OF SOCIOLOGY, 1994

The International Sociological Association has announced that its next World Congress will be held in Bielefeld, Germany, July 18-23, 1994. Research committees will be given ample space in the program. The RC28 Board will designate Session Organizers in early 1993. RC members who are eager to organize sessions during the World Conference, should contact Treiman or Ganzeboom at the earliest possible date.

                                                                  AUSTRALIAN MEETING, JANUARY 1994

During the year of the World Congress, the RC usually meets only once. However, for 1994, we plan to have a conference in Canberra, Australia, in early January 1994, organized by Mariah Evans and colleagues. Details on this conference will be announced in the next Newsletter.

Nijmegen (Netherlands), November 20 1992

Dear Member of the Research Committee on Social Stratification of the International Sociological Association:

As you know, you are a member of the Research Committee on Social Stratification of the International Sociological Association. This Research Committee maintains a network of over 500 active stratification researchers from around the world. It organizes semi-annual conferences and distributes a Newsletter, that you have been receiving in the past.

The activities of Research Committee are financed through support of its members. Unfortunately, I have not received your dues over the present period, that started in August 1990 and ends in August 1994. As a consequence, we have to discontinue your membership. You will receive no Newsletters and cannot attend any conferences, until your payment has been received. The membership fees are due:

US $ 40regular RC membership fee (4 years).

US $ 10reduced RC membership fee (4 years) for members from soft currency and developing countries, students, and those who are unemployed or retired.

Members who joined after 1990, should pay the proportionate amount.

The RC membership fees are needed for (a) expenses associated with production and mailing of the Newsletter and communications among board members and (b) to subsidize travel of members from soft currency and developing countries to conferences. The applicable amount can be paid in one of the following ways:

‑Send a traveller's cheque (preferably in US $) "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom";

‑For those with American bank accounts: send a personal cheque with the dollar amount "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom";

If you are unable to make a payment but still want to continue your membership, please write me a letter.

Yours,

Harry B.G. Ganzeboom,

Secretary-Treasurer
