NEWSLETTER ISA RC28 1 MAY 1993
════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
CANBERRA, AUSTRALIAN MEETING, JANUARY 5‑7, 1994
The Canberra, Australia meeting to be organized by Mariah Evans and colleagues will be held January 5‑7, Wednesday to Friday, 1994 (arrival Tuesday, January 4; departure Saturday, January 8) at The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. General theme of the conference will be:
SOCIAL STRATIFICATION AND MOBILITY
Time & place: Intending participants should send their paper proposals directly to the session organizers by October 31, 1993. If your intended paper does not fit into one of the thematic sessions, send it to Zagorski for the open session. Send your registration form directly to Mariah Evans, also by October 31, 1993.
There will be a registration fee of AUS $ 60 (about US $ 40‑45). It will be waived for students and participants from 'soft currency' countries. The fee includes the conference dinner.
Participants are recommended to reserve rooms in the University House adjacent to the ANU Coombs Building, where the conference will take place. This is a decent, hotel‑like accommodation. There is a restaurant, breakfast room and lunch 'cellar bar' in the University House as well as coffee making facilities in the rooms.
Travel: Everybody will need Australian visas. Please start the procedure early since the Christmas rush may cause the delay. Should you need an invitation letter, write to Mariah Evans as soon as possible.
The major gateway to Canberra is Sydney (there is no international airport in the Australian capital city). Some international flights arrive too late to make the connections to Canberra. If you wish to arrive in Sydney early and stay a few days, please make the hotel reservation through your travel agent. There may be a shortage of rooms because of the Christmas/New Year period. Make your flight reservation as soon as possible, since the flights to Australia are very heavily booked during this period.
Canberra is about 4 hours bus/car drive and less than 1 hour flight from Sydney. There are frequent bus connections to Canberra from the Sydney airport. The tickets (about AUS $ 25 one way) can be bought from the tourist office located in the airport's arrival waiting hall. The last minute hotel reservation can be made in the same place. Australian domestic airline tickets are cheaper (sometimes free) when bought overseas as a part of the international ticket.

FOLLOW‑UP ECONOMIC SOCIOLOGY CONFERENCE
MELBOURNE JANUARY 10‑11 1994
Krzysztof Zagorski and his colleagues from the Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, The University of Melbourne, Australia, are organizing a follow‑up conference on THE INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT OF INEQUALITY AND VALUE SYSTEMS. The conference is open to participants in ISA RC28 meeting as well as to other interested scholars. The general problem to be discussed is how economic segmentation and different economic as well as political institutions, especially during their transformations and reforms, influence various aspects of inequality and related attitudes. Both empirical and theoretical papers are invited. Comparative papers are very welcome. The convenors will organize all papers into thematic sessions after receiving paper proposals.
Arrival Sunday, 9 January 1994 (or earlier); departure Wednesday, 12 January 1994 (or later). There is a possibility that additional morning session will be organized on Wednesday, 12 January, if the number of papers will exceed the initial expectation. There will be the registration fee of AUS $ 50 (about US$ 35) which includes the official reception. The fee will be waived for students and participants from 'soft currency' countries.
Intending participants should send a letter to Krzysztof Zagorski at their earliest convenience, but no later than 15 August 1993. The letter should contain a title and a short abstract of the proposed paper. Accomodation reservation forms will be forwarded to intending participants thereafter. The prices will approximate those in Canberra. Should you need an invitation letter to arrange your visa (everybody need Australian visas arranged well in advance), request it in your letter.
Most international airlines fly to/from Sydney and Melbourne for the same price, often even during the same flight. Thus you may arrive in Sydney and depart from Melbourne, if you wish to participate in both Canberra and Melbourne meetings. There are three bus connections (about AUS $ 50) and frequent airline connections between Canberra and Melbourne everyday. You may also wish to share a rented car and spend a weekend at splendid Australian beaches (remember about driving on the left side). It takes about 8-9 hours to drive from Canberra to Melbourne the shortest way (inland) and a little more than 1 hour to fly. (See the Canberra RC 28 meeting information for other travel hints).

RC28-DUES
For the new ISA period that started in 1992 after the Madrid World Conference the following RC Membership fees are due:
US $ 40regular RC membership fee (4 years).
US $ 10reduced RC membership fee (4 years) for members from soft currency and developing countries, students, and those who are unemployed or retired.
Members who joined after 1992, should pay the proportionate amount.
The RC membership fees are needed for (a) expenses associated with production and mailing of the Newsletter and communications among board members and (b) to subsidize travel of members from soft currency and developing countries to conferences. The applicable amount can be paid in one of the following ways:
‑Send a traveller's cheque (preferably in US Dollars) "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom";
‑For those with American bank accounts: send a personal cheque with the dollar amount "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom";
-Send a Eurocheque "to the order of Harry Ganzeboom", made out in Dutch guilders: Dfl. 68,=, and Dfl. 17,=, respectively.
‑Transfer the amount directly in any exchangeable currency to ABN-Amro Bank Account 5556 88 623 in the name of "H. Ganzeboom, ISA RC28, Netherlands". If you do this, make sure that it is clear on whose behalf the sum is paid.
As of November 1992 membership of those that have not paid their dues for the present period is discontinued. A notice has been sent to all involved.
EMAIL LIST
Email (electronic mail) is a convenient way of communication in the scientific community. The Secretary now maintains a list of approximately 150 addresses of RC members around the world. Addressants receive advance notice of dates and places of future conferences, and other urgent messages. If you have not received messages until now, but do have an email address, send a note about your whereabouts to U211500@HNYKUN11.URC.KUN.NL.
ABSTRACTS
For both the Canberra and the Bielefeld meetings, registration should be accompagnied by an abstract of your paper. The abstract should be no more than 200-300 words and include the following information:
-full names and address (including email address) where the paper can be obtained;
-exact title and reference of the paper;
-basic subject, research problems, hypotheses and conclusions;
-reference to the data used;
-data analysis technique applied.
Abstracts should be included in the final version of the paper and be brought on the (DOS) diskette to the conference. They will be published in a forthcoming Newsletter of the Research Committee.
TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR RC-MEMBERS
The current financial situation of the RC allows for some limited support for members in need of travel funds to come to RC meetings. The following categories qualify for such support: (a) members from soft currency countries, (b) students, (c) RC members in special need. As a rule, support is given upto a maximum of US $ 500 and only once in a four-year period. The awarding of the support is contingent upon the quality of the paper contributed to the conference. Applications should be send at the earliest possible date to Harry Ganzeboom, Secretary of the RC and include the paper proposal and an itemized budget, as well as to the organizer of the conference.
