[RC28 message 2017_114] CFP: Workplace networks and women’s chances of obtaining positions of authority

Session on “The effect of women’s workplace networks on their chances of obtaining positions of authority”

Women continue to be underrepresented in positions of organizational authority globally. Existing evidence shows that employee characteristics and macro factors far from account for the whole picture, suggesting that the most promising explanations may lie in the workplace itself. One potential explanation that has been understudied is women’s networks at the workplace. Workplace networks can be beneficial for one’s career, but also dysfunctional when they lead to exclusion from attractive positions. In this session, we invite both substantive and methodological contributions concerning the effect of women’s workplace networks on their chances of obtaining positions of authority. What kind of networks facilitate women’s inroads to authority positions? Is it the case that women have to be sponsored by men in their networks at work to obtain authority, as found in Burt’s (1995) famous single case study? We welcome contributions from different paradigms and disciplines, including sociology, organizational science, and economics. The deadline for abstract submission is February 1, 2018.

[RC28 message 2017_111] New PhD position at The Institute for Analytical Sociology, Linköping University

One Fully Funded PhD Position in Analytical Sociology

The Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS), in collaboration with the Centre for Municipality Studies, seeks to fill one fully funded PhD position (for four years full-time) at Linköping University, Sweden. IAS offers a unique doctoral training program in Analytical Sociology. You will be part of a small and highly selected cohort of graduate students who will receive both theoretical and methodological research training by working in close collaboration with some of the worlds’ leading scholars in Analytical Sociology. You will be part of a collegial team of researchers who conduct cutting-edge research on important social, political, and cultural matters.

The PhD-project will be conducted within the broader project “Corruption and abuse of power in mature welfare states”. The background is that even though the Nordic countries continuously are ranked as the least corrupt in the world, lately, high-profile scandals have led several commentators to conclude that doing well in international indices measuring corruption and rule of law, does not automatically imply that such problems can be neglected in these societies. Rather, they may take other, less detectable forms such as clientelism, cronyism and nepotism. More knowledge is therefore needed about corruption in mature welfare states, in particular at the local level where much of the core of the welfare state ultimately is implemented.

To be eligible for the doctoral program you need to have a degree from an advanced-level/master program, or 240 ECTS (4 years) in courses, out of which at least 60 ECTS (1 year) must have been at the advanced/master level. 90 ECTS (1.5 years) must be in disciplines of direct relevance for Analytical Sociology, such as statistics, sociology, political science, mathematics, et cetera.

The doctoral training consists of four years of full-time studies-- one year (60 ECTS) of courses and three years of dissertation work. Throughout the program you will be employed at the IAS with a wage ladder set according to university standards. [RC28 message 2017_105] Call for papers on "Parental life courses after separation and divorce"

CALL FOR PAPERS: Workshop, 3-4 May 2018, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin

Separation and divorce have become increasingly prevalent also among couples with minor children in recent decades. Although union disruption is always a distressful event, it is most consequential for couples with minor children. Regardless of the end of their partnership, the couple is obliged to stay in contact to coordinate and negotiate their parental responsibilities. Typically, separation and divorce entail that the family splits into separate households. While women commonly continue to reside with their children, men face increasing difficulties to keep close contact with them over time. Little is known about how parents organize childcare responsibilities after separation and divorce and under which conditions fathers continue to be involved in the lives of their children. In addition, divorce and separation often lead to economic hardship and distress. The questions of how the economic situation is affected by child and spousal support payments and whether social policies can effectively alleviate some of the economic burden are not fully understood. We also have an incomplete understanding of how social policies, such as spousal support, child alimony, legal and physical custody as well as visitation rights, shape family behaviour, well-being and parent-child relationships after separation and divorce. Finally, little research exists on the subsequent life courses of divorced and separated couples with children and particularly on the interrelations across the life course prior and after divorce and separation.

The workshop focuses on the parents’ life courses after separation and divorce and on the question of how these are shaped by individual histories, but also by social policy regulations. Contributions are welcome from all social science disciplines, such as sociology, demography, social policy, social psychology, economics, and law. We invite empirical contributions (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods) from a national and international perspective.

The organizers seek contributions on the following issues:

· Economic and social consequences of separation/divorce

· Parental well-being and health after separation/divorce

· Repartnering and fertility after separation/divorce

· Non-residential fatherhood, lone fatherhood, and father-child contact after separation/divorce

· Social policies, legal regulations, and parent-child relationships after separation/divorce

Organizational Team: Michaela Kreyenfeld – Hertie School of Governance

Submission: The deadline for the submission of a (maximum) two page proposal is January 15, 2018.

Proposals can be sent to: kreyenfeld@hertieschool.org and heike.trappe@uni-rostock.de

[RC28 message 2017_102] 2 Postdoctoral positions at the Center for Social Conflict and Cohesion Studies - Chile

2 Postdoctoral Research Positions for The Chilean, Longitudinal Social Survey (ELSOC)

Two Postdoctoral Research Positions open at the Centre for Social Conflict and Cohesion, Studies (COES), hosted at the Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez or Universidad Diego Portales.

COES invites applications for two postdoctoral research positions aimed at producing cutting-edge scientific research using available data from a longitudinal panel study conducted in Chile. COES is a multidisciplinary centre that produces social science research on conflicts and social cohesion in Chile and informs policy making with evidenced based research. In order to reach these goals, and using an international standard in the sampling design and measurement procedure, COES developed the Chilean Longitudinal Social Survey (ELSOC). This panel study, unique in Latin America, consists of annually surveying a representative sample of nearly 3,000 Chileans over a decade. It evaluates the way in which Chileans think, feel and behave regarding a set of social issues related to conflict and social cohesion in Chile.

COES is seeking 2 postdoctoral scholars with a PhD in social science disciplines such as

psychology, economics, sociology, geography, political science and other related disciplines with a clear interest in developing their own research agenda using the data from ELSOC (see a summary of the survey below). Qualified candidates must have a PhD (awarded within the last 5 years or expected to be awarded in the next 6 months) with a strong background in statistics and survey methodology and ideally with experience in analysing longitudinal data as well as strong writing skills.

All candidates must have clear interest in topics that fits into the Centre’s research agenda such as social movements, political socialisation, social stratification, intergroup relations, social identity and intergroup contact, multidimensional inequalities, segregation, urban conflict, territorial inequality, legitimacy of the prevailing political and economic system. The postdoctoral scholars’ primary responsibilities will be planning and conducting studies and preparing papers for publication and international conferences based on the available longitudinal survey data (ELSOC) in collaboration with COES researchers from different disciplines. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to undertake some teaching in English or Spanish, develop collaborations with a multidisciplinary research team and participate in the activities of COES.

The salary offered for this position is US$ 30,000 per year approximately (precise amounts may vary depending on exchange rates). Each position is for two years, but renewal for the second year will be subject to meeting probational criteria.

We also welcome applications from post-docs who would like to undertake a joint post-doc with another Chilean or international partner institution. In this case, partner institutions will share in the cost of the post-doc appointment, and candidates may reside in another country as well as Chile.

Applications are open until October 30, 2017. Please send a motivational letter, curriculum vitae, summary of Ph.D. research, research ideas based on ELSOC data (no more than two pages) and two letters of support to comunicaciones@coes.cl with the subject “POSTDOC ELSOC”. The selected candidates will be interviewed in person or by video conference. COES academic board will make the final decision. The result of this call is expected to be announced in late November or early December 2017.

[RC28 message 2017_097] Change to the RC28 Statute

Dear RC28 Members,

At the RC28 Board meeting in New York, the Board discussed the idea of creating a vice president position in addition to president and secretary-treasurer. The activities of the RC28 have been expanding recently including coordinating with RC28 meeting organizers and the ISA, managing the membership list, maintaining the mailing list and RC28 web, selecting the RC28 Significant Scholarship Award, and other business. These activities are primarily handled by the president and the secretary-treasurer. The newly created vice-president will pitch in and share the burden. The Board also believes that there are a plenty of candidates for president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer positions, and more people should have experience with running the RC28 business.

The RC28 Board would like to propose the following changes to the RC28 Statutes, so that we could have a vice president starting from the 2018-2022 term.

The current RC28 Statutes item 7

The Board shall consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 members, who will designate a President and a Secretary-Treasurer among themselves.

No member of the Board can serve more than two consecutive terms, unless s/he serves extra terms as President or Secretary-Treasurer.

be changed to the following:

The Board shall consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 members, who will designate a President, a Vice President and a Secretary-Treasurer among themselves.

No member of the Board can serve more than two consecutive terms, unless s/he serves extra terms as President, Vice President or Secretary-Treasurer.

In order to change the RC28 Statutes, the members must vote to approve the changes. I ask the RC28 members to send your vote to the following account (rc28.election@gmail.com). You simply have to state whether or not you approve the changes stated above. The deadline is 31 October, 2017. I thank you in advance for casting your vote. With kind regards,

Postdoctoral Fellow in Sociology and Social Demography - Critical Life Events

http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/BES708/postdoctoral-fellow-in-sociology-and-social-demography-critical-life-events/

The Department of Sociology, University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the project “Critical Life Events and the Dynamics of Inequality: Risk, Vulnerability, and Cumulative Disadvantage”. This is a transnational research programme involving four institutions: University of Amsterdam, University of Oxford, Stockholm University and the University of Lausanne. The project will run until 2020 and is funded by a Euro NORFACE DIAL grant.

The project’s main objectives are to understand (1) how job loss and union dissolution contribute to the accumulation of (dis)advantage over life course: (2) what mechanisms explain the (unequal) impact of these events: and (3) which work and family policies are effective in targeting these mechanisms in order to reduce inequality. Working with Professors Christiaan Monden and Erzsebet Bukodi, the Postdoctoral Researcher will take the lead on analysing the prospective 1958 and 1970 birth cohort studies, and also investigate linkages to study outcomes earlier in life.

The successful candidate will hold or expect to obtain a PhD in sociology, demography, economics, social statistics, social policy or some related discipline. Strong grounding in quantitative research methods (methods for longitudinal data analysis, in particular), demonstrated by published (or accepted) research papers in academic journals, with evaluation judged relative to career stage, and a knowledge of the broadly defined subject area – inequalities over the life-course.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR SESSION AT XIX ISA WORLD CONGRESS IN TORONTO, CANADA, JULY 15-21, 2018

Session Title: The Influences of within-Family Inequalities on Intergenerational Transmission and Social Stratification

Research Committee: RC28 Social Stratification (host committee)

Organizers: Martin Diewald; Volker Lang; Tina Baier; Bastian Mönkediek

Deadline: September 30, 2017

http://www.isa-sociology.org/en/conferences/world-congress/toronto-2018/call-for-abstracts/

Session Abstract: There is much research on the effects of between-family inequalities in resources and behaviors on intergenerational social reproduction. Yet, studies show that children from the same family can also differ a lot, contributing significantly to the overall societal stratification system. This is not only due to changes in the family structure that age-different siblings experience, but also holds true for twins. The planned session focusses on research facilitating our understanding of within-family inequalities, and how they translate into differences in the intergenerational transmission of (dis-)advantages and contribute to patterns of social mobility.

Possible topics include - but are not limited to - studies of within-family differences in inequality-related outcomes like status, earnings, educational achievements, and skill development. Studies of mechanism producing such within-family differences may comprise the classical family resources, family structure and family development. But the contributions may also focus on factors like stress or differences in parental behavior induced by differential developmental potential of children, as well as differences in parental expectations related to birth order or gender of children. Additionally, contexts outside the family like school- or neighborhood-environments and related opportunity structures and networks are of relevance. We are open for contributions addressing mechanisms related to genetic and other biological factors (i.e., research based on twin designs and studies using molecular genetic or epigenetic information) and their interplay with social forces.

[RC28 message 2017_081] Labor market and Economic perspectives on large-scale Migration in Sociology (LEMS)

Labor market and Economic perspectives on large-scale Migration in Sociology (LEMS)

Dates and location: Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) of the University of Mannheim on Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18, 2017.1

Theme: Labor market and economic sociologists take notice of each other less often than common concerns might suggest. This ignorance is particularly troubling amid the large-scale influx of immigrants and refugees into established economies over the past few years in particular and the past decade in general. Among these changes, issues of employment and emergent economic activities, which both fields focus on, gain in significance and salience. Labor market sociologists demonstrate that unregulated labor markets are neither free nor fair, diminishing hopes for quick integration. A focus on the distribution of relevant worker characteristics over a range of social dimensions such as class, gender, and ethnicity allows labor market sociologists to develop more constructive views of labor market mechanisms. Economic sociologists scrutinize dynamics around the establishment of larger social objects such as industries and “informal economies”, some of which are dominated by immigrant ethnic groups. In more specific settings, economic sociologists have found evidence that ethnic diversity—an obvious consequence of migration—increases the resilience of common market mechanisms. The conference seeks to foster a dialogue between the two views in order to develop conceptual, analytical, and empirical strategies that help us study and understand the forces undergirding the recent developments and their consequences.

[RC28 message 2017_076] Tenure-track position, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; FBK-IRVAPP WINTER SCHOOL

Would it be possible to disseminate to RC28 the attached call for applications for a tenure-track position at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Dept. of Sociology. One of our main focuses is on Social Stratification.

Barbara S. Okun, Ph.D., Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

***************************************************************************

The Fondazione Bruno Kessler – Research Institute for the Evaluation of Public Policies (FBK-IRVAPP), present 1st FBK-IRVAPP Advanced Winter School on “Advanced Methods for Impact Evaluation”

Speakers: Erich Battistin, Guido Imbens, Enrico Rettore

Date: 10 – 12 January 2018

Venue: University of Trento, Department of Sociology and Social Research, via Verdi 26, Trento, Italy

Programme: The school is designed to be particularly beneficial to graduate students and researchers with a high level of proficiency in applied policy evaluation and quantitative micro-econometrics. It will run over three consecutive days covering methods for the estimation of policy effects with endogenous participation. Different solutions to the identification problem will be considered, resulting in three thematic sessions.

January 10, 2018: Discontinuities (Enrico Rettore)

This part will address identification of policy effects when the probability of participation changes discontinuously or has kinks along observable dimensions. Starting with the basic methodology and implementation, the module will discuss extensions ranging from multiple cut-offs, to extrapolation and external validity, and randomization-inference methods.

January 11, 2018: Causality and Machine Learning (Guido Imbens)

This part will discuss the recent literature on machine learning methods for causal effects. It will start with a discussion of the basics of causal inference, including the analysis of observational studies under the assumption of unconfoundedness. Then it will discuss modern methods for experimentation including multiarmed bandits, and methods for estimating heterogeneous treatment effects. Next it will review the literature on observational studies with many covariates. It will also discuss the connection with synthetic control methods and the matrix completion literature.

January 12, 2018: Instrumental Variables (Erich Battistin)

This part will present solutions when (quasi-)experimental sources of exogenous variability for treatment participation become available. Identification of “local average” and “marginal” treatment effects will be discussed, offering a broad overview of ex-ante and ex-post evaluation methods when effects are heterogeneous across the statistical units.

Applications deadline: December 10, 2017

Targeted audience: This is an advanced/graduate course on quantitative empirical methods for policy evaluation. As such, knowledge of methods for treatment effects and quantitative micro-econometrics equivalent to Ph.D. or Doctorate level coursework are prerequisites.

Enrollment and fees: The course is limited to 30 participants, with constrained accessibility of space. Candidates can enroll through the course webpage, and will be asked to complete a short application form:

https://irvapp.fbk.eu/irvapp-winter-school-2018-advanced-methods-impact-evaluation

Online application and payment are due by December 10, 2017. It is advisable that, conditional to the offer of place, payment is made at the earliest to secure your place on the program. Enrollment will be secured only after receipt of the payment notification.

The registration fee includes workshop materials, as well as coffee and lunch breaks; it does not include dinners, accommodation, transport or any other services. We are not in the position to offer any scholarship. Students: EUR 400; HE delegates and Government: EUR 700; Others: EUR 1000 All prices are exclusive of VAT

Language: The courses will be held in English

[RC28 message 2017_069] Job opening at LIfBi and University of Bamberg, Germany

Head of Department, “Research Data Center and Method Development” at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories and the Professorship (W3) for Survey Statistics and Data Analysis

at the earliest possible date as a non-tenured employee with a contract initially limited to five years. An extension is, however, possible. Following positive evaluation, a designated permanent professorship will be available. The position of the Head of Department “Research Data Center and Method Development” is limited to a 5-year term of contract followed by the possibility of reappointment.

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) is a member of the Leibniz Association, which consists of over 90 research and infrastructure facilities in Germany. The LIfBi is a legally independent research-based infrastructure facility affiliated with the University of Bamberg, conducting research in the field of longitudinal education research. In particular, the Institute is responsible for carrying out the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). The main target of this long-term project is to provide representative data about the development of competencies and educational trajectories in Germany. Therefore, the LIfBi closely collaborates with a nationwide network of excellence (NEPS Network). In addition to the NEPS, the LIfBi carries out several significant studies funded by third parties. For further information about LIfBi please visit www.lifbi.de.

The potential candidate will be responsible for managing the Department “Research Data Center and Method Development” at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories in Bamberg. His or her research should focus on the area of statistical methodological research regarding data analysis of large-scale panel studies in an interdisciplinary context. The candidate is expected to have profound knowledge of empirical research methodology—such as, for example, in the fields of econometrics or psychometrics, the analysis of incomplete data, sampling and weighting, or linking survey and administrative data.

The position will be combined with a professorship at the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education or at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration at the University of Bamberg. Candidates will generally be expected to network with educational research facilities at the University of Bamberg, the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS), as well as with key research areas of the University of Bamberg as a whole. Contributions to Bachelor, Master, and the (discontinued) Diploma programs of the Faculty, especially the Master’s degree course “Survey Statistics”, are part of the field of duties. Potential candidates are encouraged to teach courses in a foreign language and to actively participate in academic further education. Moreover, the professorship entails a teaching load of 2 weekly hours per semester.

Applicants must have international acclaim; they have to provide in-depth knowledge and be nationally as well as internationally renowned in the field of survey statistics and data analysis. Experience of managing research projects conducted within large research alliances and the acquisition of third-party funding are further prerequisites. The relevant qualifications consist of a completed academic degree, pedagogical suitability, a special talent for scientific activities generally proven through the quality of a doctorate, and, in addition to this, further academic achievements.

Additional scientific credentials must be certified by a Habilitation or equivalent academic qualification, which may also have been obtained through activities outside of higher education or as part of a junior professorship. International applications are expressly welcome. The competence and willingness to teach in English are a prerequisite. The faculty aims to increase the percentage of women in research and teaching and, therefore, welcomes applications by female scientists. Severely disabled applicants with essentially identical qualifications will be preferentially selected. The University of Bamberg has been certified as a family friendly university by the Hertie Foundation and, therefore, campaigns for the compatibility of family and professional life. It promotes the equality of women and men in employment. The University of Bamberg is a member of the regional Dual Career Network (DCNN). It supports the partners of newly appointed professors. Detailed information can be found on the website of the Dual Career Network of Northern Bavaria (http://www.dualcareer-nordbayern.de/).

Submitting Applications: Usual application documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications and lecturing activities, copies of references and certificates) in German or English are to be sent before August 18, 2017, to Prof. Dr. Sandra Buchholz, Director of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories, (Wilhelmsplatz 3, 96047 Bamberg) and additionally by e-mail to: bewerbung@lifbi.de. [RC28 message 2017_060] In Memoriam, Petr Matějů, 1950 – 2017

Dear Hiroshi, Dear all,

I would like to share with you all the obituary of Petr Matějů that his family has approved. Petr was an incredibly important member of the RC28 community, the ISSP community, and in international forums on educational policy and educational inequality. Due to his exhaustive work he was not able to attend several RC28 meetings in recent years, so perhaps some new members may not know him well. Even those of us who have been friends with him for a long time, we may not all know the full breadth and scale of his incredible work. His obituary is valuable reading for all of us.

Petr Matějů, 1950 – 2017

In the early hours of Friday, June 16, the renowned Czech sociologist Petr Matějů passed away after a long illness, at the age of 66.

Petr Matějů was an exceptionally transformative, hardworking and imaginative sociologist. After a certain hesitation between theatrical and sociological careers, he decisively took the less visible but more adventurous path. In the 1970s, during the normalization period of communist Czechoslovakia, he began to develop his expertise in social stratification, inequality and mobility, utilizing structural equation methods. His methodological expertise was strengthened by his 1987 research stay at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he became a student and friend of Robert M. Hauser. He joined the RC28 community in 1984 in Budapest, and has been an integral member ever since. His commitment to RC28 is reflected in the fact that since his involvement, he was only one of a few researchers to host RC28 meetings twice, the 1991 spring meeting in Prague and the 2007 spring meeting in Brno.

After the collapse of communism, he was the leading scientific authority in the quantitative analysis of the Czech social transformation. Along with Donald Treiman, Iván Szelényi, and others, he played a key role in project Social Stratification in Eastern Europe after 1989 and Circulation of Elites, which produced seminal comparative research of social stratification and mobility in five post-communist countries. He established Czech participation in the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) in 1992, before many other post-communist countries, as well as the International Social Justice Program (ISJP), the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), and countless other surveys of students and adults.

His analyses of social transformation, inspired by the work of Pierre Bourdieu, shed light on the transformation of social and political capital into economic capital as the dominant strategy of success in the post-communist transition, particularly in the reproduction of elites. Educational attainment, as an individual’s investment decision, was of primary importance in his work. In his consistent vision, the openness of the system and the equality of educational opportunities had not only economic (competitiveness), but also social (as a mechanism of social justice) and political significance (as a condition of the deepening the rootedness of democracy).

Petr Matějů rejected research only for its own sake, and sought to identify the policy implications of his empirical findings. Along with Jiří Večerník and a large team of researchers, in the 1990s he carried out the project “Social Trends: Research – Archive – Publications – Education,” in the framework of which was established the Czech Sociological Data Archive and the integrative book Ten Years of Rebuilding Capitalism: Czech Society after 1989. In 2002, he established the Institute for Social and Economic Analyses (ISEA) in Prague to conduct independent policy research. His research on educational inequality became the cornerstone of the Czech Government’s White Paper of Tertiary Education, which aimed to expand educational opportunities at the tertiary level and enhance the independence of universities from the state. From 2007-2008, he was selected into the international team of Fulbright New Century Scholars on the theme “Higher Education in the 21st Century – Access and Equity.” From 2006-2011 he also represented the Czech Republic in the Education Policy Committee of the OECD.

Despite being so policy oriented – or precisely because of it – he understood the fundamental importance of basic research and was as a foremost advocate of public research funding. With that goal, in 2006-2010 he was an active member of the Czech Government’s Council on Research, Development and Innovation and from 2008-2014 he was the President of the Czech Science Foundation. In that significant capacity, he implemented a much deeper internationalization of the scientific review process, supported the funding of large projects most likely to lead to scientific breakthroughs, and secured increases in government support for basic research.

Through all of these often exhausting responsibilities, Petr Matějů never ceased to conduct his research activity, even in the last days of his life. The breadth of his Czech and international publications, including voluminous edited volumes, is impressive, and has made him the most cited Czech sociologist. A number of his articles and the co-authored book (in Czech) The Power of Beauty: Does Beauty and Attractiveness Help Achieve Life Success? are just before publication. In addition, we cannot forget his significant teaching activity at multiple universities in Prague, Brno and abroad. Many of the most notable contemporary Czech sociologists worked closely with him or studied under his guidance, thus training an entire generation of Czech sociologists.

While his research and policy reforms were not agreed to by all, even his critics acknowledged that he was a leading mind of his generation, particularly in the areas of social, educational and gender inequality. And while he has departed from us so early, he leaves behind an extensive body of work that continues to live on and will be critically developed and extended.

Michael L. Smith, Ph.D., Senior Researcher, Institute for Social and Economic Analyses And Economics Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences (CERGE-EI)

[RC28 message 2017_048] Poverty Website and Calculator

Jeylan Mortimer suggested that I get in touch with you about something I’ve been working on which might be of interest to the RC28 ISA Research Committee on Stratification and Mobility. It’s a new website and set of tools dealing with American poverty and inequality. The focal point of the website is a poverty risk calculator that estimates for the first time the likelihood that an individual will experience poverty at some point in the future. The idea is similar to the heart disease risk calculators that you can find on the Internet. In this case, the data is based on the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). There is also a discussion guide designed for various groups to further explore different issues around poverty and inequality. The link to the website is: https://confrontingpoverty.org/

One of the keys to the website and calculator is the use of longitudinal data and applying it across the life course. Thanks much!

29-30 November 2017, Centre for Demographic Research, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

Deadline for submitting abstracts: 15 June 2017

=================================================

Call for papers, 43nd Quetelet Conference, 2017

The demography of refugees and displaced populations

29-30 November 2017, Centre for Demographic Research, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

Deadline for submitting abstracts: 15 June 2017

Population displacement has reached unprecedented levels globally. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that in 2015, more than 65 million people, or one person in 113, were forcibly displaced by conflict, persecution, violence or human rights violations. Two-thirds (62%) of these 65 million people were internally displaced, one-third were refugees (21.3 million) and 5% were asylum-seekers whose proceedings were ongoing (3.2 million). This global movement concerns almost all regions and territories, but the intensity of flows and reception conditions vary considerably throughout the world. A large majority of refugees are hosted in developing countries (86% of people of concern to UNHCR). Asia has the largest number of internally displaced persons (29.4 million), with large numbers of internally displaced persons in Syria and Iraq and many refugees in Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan and Iran. In Western countries, the number of refugees hosted remains modest, even though refugee populations occupy an important place in public opinion and the debates that animate the political agenda. Recent political changes in the United States or in some European Union countries suggest that access conditions will continue to narrow and border controls will tighten in the coming years.

In this context, demographers and social scientists have a role to play, in particular by estimating the flows of displaced populations, by studying the life trajectories of these displaced persons and by improving the quality and comparability of statistics on displaced populations. In some countries, such as Belgium, there are rich administrative databases to monitor the administrative procedures of refugees. In other countries, available estimates of the numbers and characteristics of displaced persons remain based on partial registration-type data from government or NGOs, census data or surveys. Overall, beyond the mere measurement of stocks and population flows, few analyses specifically address the demographic behaviour of refugees and displaced persons.

The 2017 Quetelet Conference will be devoted to analysing the flows and demographic behaviours of refugee and displaced populations. Communications can focus on theoretical or methodological issues (sources and quality of data, innovative sampling and analytical approaches). They may be comparative or focus on a specific region, country, or community, and be based on both quantitative and qualitative approaches.

The five main axes selected for the conference are as follows:

1 - Data issues and methods

In a world in motion, how can we reliably measure forced migration? Which sampling techniques are most appropriate in the absence of adequate sampling frames? What is the reliability of routine data, such as those collected in refugee camps? What use can be made of sample surveys and censuses? To what extent are births and deaths of refugees and IDPs registered in civil registration and vital statistics systems in the host and origin countries?

2 - Migration routes

In recent years, the number of displaced persons has increased significantly. Has this increase been accompanied by changes in the migration routes of displaced populations? Has the tightening of access conditions in Europe encouraged the development of new routes? Among the individuals who have acquired refugee status, what is the frequency of return migration? What do we know about the migration paths of asylum seekers whose applications are rejected?

3 - Health of refugees and displaced populations

What are the excess risks of death during displacements or in refugee camps? To what extent do host and origin populations differ from the displaced populations in terms of health, including reproductive health and mental health? Is it possible to identify mortality differentials, possibly by cause of death, between these different populations?

4 - Impact of forces displacement on families and couples

How are forced displacements affecting families? What are the interactions between the experience of refugees and the formation or breakdown of unions? How do family reunifications take place in the context of forced displacement? How does the forced displacement alter fertility intentions and behaviors? What are the consequences of forced displacement for children in terms of familial environment, education and other outcomes such as early marriage?

5 - Legal provisions and life trajectories

The legal arrangements related to displaced persons are constantly evolving, sometimes suddenly. What are the consequences of changes in the legal framework on the life course of refugees and internally displaced persons? Submissions can focus here on the conditions of access to the territory (notably through humanitarian visas) and the rights of displaced persons.

Submitting a paper to the Quetelet Conference

In three pages maximum, extended abstracts will present the topic of the research, the objectives, the data and methods used, and preliminary results. They must be sent by e-mail (chairequetelet@uclouvain.be) before 15 June 2017. Submissions should list the full names, affiliations, and email addresses of all co-authors. Authors will be notified of the status of their submission by June 30, 2017. After notification of acceptance, papers must be submitted by 31 October 2017 (sent by e-mail to chairequetelet@uclouvain.be). They will be posted on the website of the research center (www.uclouvain.be/demo) in PDF format.

Dear RC 28 members:

As some of you know, because our plan was announced at the Cologne RC 28 meeting three weeks ago, we have initiated an archive of syllabi for courses on social stratification, social mobility, and social inequality. This archive is intended to benefit those of you who are planning or updating courses in these areas as well as those who simply want to see what your colleagues consider important.

Thanks to heroic effort by Donald Treiman of UCLA with the support from the UCLA’s California Center for Population Research, we are now ready to try out the archive. There you will find our initial set of syllabi plus a submission form to contribute your own. To access it, go to the following site:

https://ccpr.ucla.edu/funding/rc28-syllabus-deposit/ .

We encourage you to use the archive, both by downloading syllabi of interest to you and by depositing your own syllabi for the benefit of others. If you discover problems or have suggestions for improvement, please write to Don Treiman (treimandj@gmail.com), who proposed the archive and got UCLA’s California Center for Population Research to provide the necessary technical support.

[RC28 message 2017_037] Call for papers: Pathways into, through and out of higher education

PATHWAYS INTO, THROUGH AND OUT OF HIGHER EDUCATION -AN INTERNATIONAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE 11TH-12TH SEPTEMBER 2017, HANNOVER, GERMANY

With this interdisciplinary conference we aim to bring together international experts in higher education and student trajectory research with a focus in quantitative empirical analysis. As the higher education landscape in many countries is currently undergoing significant transformation at a fast pace, we aim to catch a glance on the future of higher education research: Systematic longitudinal research and international comparisons are important elements of higher education research for seizing the change of student populations and higher education institutions from a scientific perspective. The systematic development of a comparative branch of longitudinal research in higher education is an important prerequisite in order to understand pathways into and out of higher education and to investigate economic and non-economic returns to higher education. By gathering international experts in this field, the conference will contribute to developing theories and methods for comparative research based on microlevel longitudinal data in higher education. The conference will be clustered around four thematic units: 1. Pathways into higher education and institutional differentiation; 2. Student trajectories, student mobility and student success; 3. Transitions from higher education to the labour market; 4. International comparisons with microdata

We invite contributions from a broad range of disciplines, such as education sciences, sociology, economics and psychology. The conference will have a focus on quantitative empirical research, in particular contributions that apply longitudinal approaches and/or cross-national comparisons. Issues of data availability, data collection and appropriate statistical tools for the analysis of complex longitudinal survey and register data currently are major concerns in the scientific community; contributions dealing with these issues hence are particularly welcome. Early career researchers are invited to apply for a best paper award (€ 250,-) by submitting a full paper.

Conference fee The German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) generously supports the conference. Participation is free of charge. Information about travel and accommodation can be found on the conference website www.dzhw.eu/pathways (online on April 13th).

Abstract submission: The deadline for abstract submission is May 15th.

Notification of acceptance on June 15th; Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to pathways@dzhw.eu

Authors are invited to submit:

• A short abstract (500 words). The abstract must include the names, affiliations, and email addresses of all authors, up to five key-words and a description of the topic, theoretical background, data and research methods, and (first) findings.

• If an application for a best paper award is intended (only early career researchers) a full paper (length should not exceed 20 pages) has to be submitted. The full paper must include the names, afiliations, and email-adresses of all authors, up to five key-words and a description of the topic, theoretical background, data and research methods, findings and conclusions.

[RC28 message 2017_032] Conference Ethnic inequality on the labour market: cross-national perspectives and causal analysis, University of Amsterdam, 28-29 september 2017

In the past decades, an extensive body of literature has emerged that investigates the labour market performance of ethnic minorities in comparison to the majority population. Researchers have focused on characteristics of job seekers, such as their ethnic origin, skills, motivation, and work experience. Similarly, scholars have studied employers, mainly focusing on ethnic discrimination and workplace characteristics. A third avenue of research is to study how national institutions affect ethnic inequalities on the labour market. This conference brings together scholars studying the causes and consequences of ethnic disparities in the labour market. We especially invite contributions that are crossnationally comparative, and contributions that focus on the causal analysis of ethnic inequalities, for example, using experimental designs.

Confirmed speakers include:

Michael Gaddis, University of California (UCLA), Los Angeles

Ruud Koopmans, WZB Berlin Social Science Centre

Kevin Stainback, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Doris Weichselbaumer, Johannes Kepler University Linz

The event is organized by the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Center for Inequality Studies (AMCIS). During the workshop, each paper will be discussed by a discussant and participants will be asked to act as a discussant for one of the papers presented. There is no conference fee; lunch and a conference dinner will be provided.

Please send your proposal for a contribution no later than 15 May to the organizer, Bram Lancee (B.Lancee@uva.nl) with amcis@uva.nl in cc. Abstracts of a maximum of 300 words should include the title, name(s) and affiliation(s) of authors as well as specifying the main research question, methods and findings.

This post is full-time, and subject to completion of a successful review, permanent and is available from the start of the 2017/18 academic year, or as soon as possible thereafter. This joint appointment will be held in conjunction with a Non-tutorial Professorial Fellowship at Nuffield College. The salary for this position includes university pay and the college’s academic allowance and thus the total pensionable salary runs from £67,477 to £83,094 per year. Call for papers: 2017 ESPAnet Conference (European Social Policy Association) - Stream 25: Economic crisis, poverty and poverty reactions 14th-16th September 2017, Lisbon, Portugal

The global economic downturn has undermined life chances and prospects of people across Europe. With the adverse impacts of the ‘Great Recession’ only gradually becoming clearer, the research and policy interest in its consequences is more relevant than ever. While the main patterns of the recession have been well-explored, there is a need in further exploring the longer-term consequences on people’s life outcomes, the life phases at which people faced an increased risk, as well as the important question how policy reactions and policy context have moderated the most negative outcomes of the recession. Furthermore, research needs to take into account the differing impact of the recession across European countries.

We invite the submission of papers on a range of topics related to poverty, policy and the economic crisis, including:

– poverty trends in times of economic crisis and how policy affects these

– long-lasting poverty consequences of an economic crisis and policies to prevent these

– economic crisis, poverty and policy in the life-course

– what long-term economic depression means for the use of relative concepts of poverty

– policy reactions to the economic depression and their outcomes

[RC28 message 2017_022] CfA Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences 2017

Linking Theory and Empirical Research Berlin, July 16 - 27, 2017

We are delighted to announce the 7th Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences. The summer school aims at supporting young researchers by strengthening their ability in linking theory and empirical research. The two-week program creates an excellent basis for the development of their current research designs.

In the first week, we address the key methodological challenges of concept-building, causation/explanation, and micro-macro linkage that occur in almost all research efforts. We strive for a clarification of the epistemological foundations underlying methodological paradigms. In the second week, these methodological considerations are applied to central empirical fields of research in political science, sociology, and other related disciplines. In this second part of the program, participants are assigned to four thematic groups according to their own research topics. The thematic areas covered are: "External Governance, Interregionalism, and Domestic Change", "Citizenship, Migration, and Identities", "Social Struggle and Globalization", and "Democracy at the Crossroads".

The program is characterized by a varied format comprising lectures, workshops, seminars, and one-to-one consultations. During the summer school, participants will also have the opportunity to present and discuss their own work extensively. Participants will be provided with hands-on advice for their research designs.

The school brings together a faculty of renowned international and Berlin-based scholars. Among the confirmed international lecturers are Dorothee Bohle (Central European University), Donatella della Porta (Scuola Normale Superiore), Gary Goertz (University of Notre Dame), Macartan Humphreys (Columbia University), Sanjay Reddy (New School for Social Research), Saskia Sassen (Columbia University), and Hendrik Wagenaar (University of Sheffield).

The Berlin Summer School was co-funded by the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. Moreover, we receive generous funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Details on travel grants and tuition fees can be found on our webpage.

The international summer school is open to 50 PhD candidates, advanced master students, and young postdocs. The call for applications is currently open. Applications can be submitted online via the application form on the summer school webpage until March 31, 2017. The decisions of the selection committee will be announced to the applicants in April. For more information, please visit our webpage at www.berlinsummerschool.de.

[RC28 message 2017_021] Call for Papers_8 March | ARI Conference on Labor Market Uncertainties for Youth and Young Adults

We are organising an international conference on Labor Market Uncertainties for Youth and Young Adults at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore. Could you circulate to the members of RC28 the following Calls for Papers? Thank you!

CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE | 8 MARCH 2017

Labor Market Uncertainties for Youth and Young Adults

DATE: 9-10 November 2017

VENUE: Asia Research Institute, ARI Seminar Room,AS8 Level 4, 10 Kent Ridge Crescent, Singapore 119260, National University of Singapore, Kent Ridge Campus

WEBSITE: https://ari.nus.edu.sg/Event/Detail/aed32852-d5aa-4e32-bbdb-94d98abadeba

Youth and young adults (roughly aged 15 to 35) are the drivers of future development in a society. They are incredible treasures for the economy, society and family. Their employment experiences affect a wide range of social behavior and well-being. Examples include their family formation behaviour such as marriage, parenthood, family dynamics, intergenerational relations, family consumption behaviour, as well as their future achievements, physical and psychological well-being.

The falling fertility rates and increasing aging population in many Asian countries have led to a shrinking proportion of working-age population hence a disappearing of the first demographic dividend. How to make full use of the working age population thus becomes a critical issue. Since the global recession in 2008, the high unemployment rates have become a concern for most countries. During the economic downturns, notably around 1997 and 2008, unemployment rates for youth have soared in many countries to levels significantly higher than those in other age groups. For instance, the youth unemployment rate in Southeast Asia is projected to be 13.6 percent in 2017, higher than 12.4 in 2015.

The heterogeneity of youth unemployment in Asia warrants careful examinations. For example, the gender gap in youth unemployment varies by regions. In East Asia, the youth unemployment rate for males has been higher than females since the late 1990s. In Southeast Asia, female youth unemployment is projected to reach 14.1 percent in 2017. These unemployment patterns also vary by other individual traits, family SES, and policy contexts. In addition, the long-term unemployment (with a duration longer than one year) has also increased in countries such as Japan and India. Less documented is the underemployment pattern among youth and young adult labor.

There is an urgent need to advance our knowledge about the varied reasons and consequences of these unstable labor market circumstances for young people, identify the vulnerable population, and develop potential policy interventions for the different regions in Asia.

In this conference, we seek to gain a better understanding of the following themes:

The landscape and patterns of unemployment, underemployment (both in domestic labour and the young migrant labour), NEET (not in education, employment, or training), among the youth and young adults in Asia, including young domestic labor and young migrant labor.

Social antecedents of unemployment and underemployment.

Short-term and long-term effects of unemployment on the psychological well-being and health of the young adults, family dynamics and family formation behavior, intergenerational time and money transfers, and career trajectories.

Policy implications on how to build a friendly and supportive environment for supporting youth and young adults to keep gainful employment, as well as to enhance their human and social capital to establish a smooth transition to adulthood and parenthood.

Cross-national comparison of these trends, antecedents and consequences.

Both qualitative and quantitative research, particularly those that are comparative and longitudinal in nature, are welcome.

In addition, there is potentially a possibility for employment in a related research project with Berlin as the place of work. The successful candidate will conduct research within the project Early Prevention of Drop Out from Higher Education (PraventAbb) (Principal investigators: Prof. Dr. Marita Jacob and Anna Kroth, Ph.D.) funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The project carries out a field experiment in high schools to study how interventions that aim at fostering grit (perseverance and passion for long-term goals), academic selfefficacy and college related informdness affect study behavior. The project investigates the short and long-term effects of these interventions on college enrolment and study success and analyses its mediators. The intervention workshops are developed jointly with experienced guidance counselors and are implemented by them. The participating students in the treatment and the comparison group are surveyed regularly over the course of two years.

Tasks: Jointly with the team members, the successful candidate will develop the interventions, conduct the experiment and the surveys, analyze the data and write the resulting publications. For candidates without a doctoral degree, further qualification in the form of a dissertation related to the research project is highly welcome. For postdoctoral researchers joint research with team members about related topics is highly welcome. It is possible to collect additional data in the surveys or to employ a qualitative approach.

Your profile: You have successfully completed a Master’s or doctoral degree in sociology, economics, education or psychology. You are interested in the topic of the research project. You have excellent knowledge of quantitative social research methods, ideally you are experienced in collecting survey data. You have excellent English language skills (written and spoken), ideally you also have German language skills. You are able to work independently and in a team and you have good communication skills. You ideally are ready to work in the project for three years.

We offer: The Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology at the University of Cologne is recognized internationally for its longstanding tradition in empirical social research and has more than 120 members. You would work closely with a team of highly motivated researchers who work on this project and on related projects. We offer excellent advising for doctoral and postdoctoral work and many options for training, collaboration, interdisciplinary research and funding for presenting at international conferences. As a doctoral student you would become a member of the Cologne Graduate School in Management, Economics and Social Sciences (CGS) where you can participate in a variety of courses. The University of Cologne aims at increasing the share of women in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages qualified female researchers to apply. Applications from severely disabled applicants are especially encouraged and will be given preferential consideration in case of equal qualification.

Please include the following materials in your application: CV, degree certificates, grade transcript (if available), job references (written or contacts), a paper or a publication written by you (e.g. thesis), a two-page cover letter describing your experience and skills relevant to the project and the research questions you would like to study in your doctoral or postdoctoral work.

Applications should be submitted electronically in no more than two pdf documents (the paper in a separate file) to sekretariat.soziologie@uni-koeln.de by February, 19, 2017. Please feel free to contact Dr. Anna Kroth (anna.kroth@uni-koeln.de) regarding any questions you might have.

[RC28 message 2017_015] Reminder: INAS 2017, Call for Abstracts February 1, 2017

INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF ANALYTICAL SOCIOLOGISTS

The 10th INAS Conference – June 8 and 9, 2017 in Oslo, Norway ”Segregation in Schools and Neighborhoods: Consequences and Dynamics”

Keynote speaker: Jon Elster, Columbia University: "The justice motive in the French and American revolutions"

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Deadline: February 1st, 2017

Analytical sociology is a general approach to explaining the social world. It is concerned with phenomena such as common ways of (inter-) acting in a society, social network structures and patterns of segregation, and collectively shared and diffused cultural ideas. The mode of explanation is to specify in clear and precise ways the mechanisms through which social phenomena are brought about. Parts of analytical sociology focus on action and interaction as the cogs and wheels of social processes, while others consider the dynamic social processes that these actions and interactions bring about.

We welcome presentations using any qualitative or quantitative methods that allow for the study of social mechanisms and the complex social dynamics they give rise to. We also welcome purely theoretical papers dealing with central aspects of the explanatory approach of analytical sociology, and papers based on simulation techniques, such as ABM. In particular, we welcome presentations on the dynamics and consequences of segregation in schools and neighborhoods.

Please submit your abstracts of 200‐500 words via the conference website http://www.sv.uio.no/iss no later than the February 1, 2017. Your submission should contain the following elements: 1) name and e‐mail address of presenting author; 2) affiliation of presenting author; 3) complete list of author(s); 3) abstract

For more information on practical details such as location, hotel, etc. please visit the website, which will be updated with more information before February 1st, 2017. Conference registration will be opened on this site after the call for abstracts’ deadline has passed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send an email to inas-2017@sosgeo.uio.no

[RC28 message 2017_013] American Behavioral Scientist special issue on Effectively Maintained Inequality in Education

Dear RC28 Members,

Delma Byrne and I (Samuel R. "Sam" Lucas) would like to announce publication of the *American Behavioral Scientist* special issue on "Effectively Maintained Inequality in Education." Much of the work on the issue was conducted at RC28 meetings in Gothenburg, Essex, Iowa City, and Trento. The issue contains 7 papers--one paper on the theoretical linkages between EMI and other theories, one paper on appropriate methods for assessing EMI, and 5 country-specific analyses. The issue will eventually be moved but for now it can be found at: http://journals.sagepub.com/toc/abs/current

We hope the issue contributes to efforts to critically assess the applicability of EMI in multiple countries and, more important, to deepening our understanding of and ability to address inequality.

[RC28 message 2017_010] Research and Policy Workshop on Family Changes and Housing Transitions in the Life Course

Research and Policy Workshop on Family Changes and Housing Transitions in the Life Course, St. Andrews, UK, 18-19 May 2017 https://ftht.sociology.cam.ac.uk/event/workshop

In recent decades, European societies have witnessed fundamental changes in partnership patterns and dynamics. Marriage rates have declined in all European countries, non-marital cohabitation has become common, divorce and separation levels have significantly increased. Changing family patterns have shaped residential and housing histories of individuals and increased the diversity of family and housing trajectories; some individuals still marry once and live in a family home for most of their lives, whereas others experience multiple partnership and housing transitions. At the same time, transformations within housing markets such as increasingly constrained access to homeownership have changed the role that family events play in shaping housing transitions across the life course. Taken together, these new demographic and housing realities have major implications for current and future housing inequalities, patterns of social stratification and opportunities for spatial mobility.

This international workshop brings together academic researchers and non-academic policy makers in the areas of family, population and housing policies to discuss recent research on the relationships between family changes and housing transitions, the short- and long-term effects of partnership changes on housing conditions of individuals and families, and the challenges that changing housing systems and new demographic realities pose to family, housing and welfare policies in the UK and beyond.

The workshop is a joint event of the PartnerLife project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), and the German Research Foundation (DFG); and of the project on Families and Housing Tenure in Young Adulthood funded by the ESRC Future Research Leaders scheme. The workshop will be held at the University of St. Andrews. Academic presentations will be the focus of the first day, whereas the second day will provide the opportunity for academic researchers and decision-makers to discuss the key results of academic research and their policy implications.

We invite scientific contributions to the program of the first day. To apply, send a short abstract (max. 250 words) and an extended abstract (max. 1000 words) to J.Mikolai@liverpool.ac.uk by 31 January 2017.

[RC28 message 2017_007] Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association (SSA) 2017

„Common Good and Self-interest” June 21 – 23, 2017, Institute for Sociology at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) Call for Papers: ‘Migration against the Background of Common Good and Self-Interest’

The aim of the workshop ‘Migration against the Background of Common Good and Self-interest’ is to bring together researchers who are concerned with the causes and consequences of migration in the interplay between (individual) self-interest and (social) common good. Migration and refugee movements are not only a global phenomenon of sociological interest in the past, it is actual than ever before in public debates and thus of socio-political relevance. Recently, we can observe a large influx of refugees. According to estimates by the United Nations (U.N.) more than one million people sought sanctuary in Europe by 2015, which places considerable economic, political as well as public challenges. Simultaneously, many Western countries are faced with ageing societies and concerned about labour force shortages. This, not least, they try to retain highly qualified migrants to the national labour markets to maintain or promote the (national) self-interest as well as the social common good. In addition to purely existential reasons for migration and flight such as war and threat, also economic, religious and political persecution, as well as social and family reasons plays a role.

To address this diversity, the workshop focuses on migration-specific questions, which are subject of self-interest and common good. Papers are invited for the following thematic areas:

 Causes and reasons for migration decisions

 Social impacts and effects through migration

 Social participation and integration of migrants

 Acceptance, fear, and prejudice against migration in the host society

 Individual, family and social support for and of migrants

Submission: Please submit your abstracts up to 400 words to migration-sgs17@soziologie.uzh.ch until February 15th, 2017. Abstracts should include the aim of your research, theoretical framework, information on data and methods as well as the main (or expected) findings. Please also indicate if you prefer to present in German or English. You will be notified on acceptance of your submission by February 22nd, 2017.

GERMAN NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL PANEL STUDY (NEPS) AND ITS RESEARCH POTENTIAL

INTRODUCING THE DATA INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE GERMAN NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL PANEL STUDY (NEPS) AND ITS RESEARCH POTENTIAL

August 11, 2017 | 9:00 am to 4:30 pm | Columbia University, New York City

The workshop will introduce researchers to the broad and continuously expanding database of the NEPS. This database is available free of charge to the scientific community. The aim of this course is to provide an insight into the design and survey program of the study, its rich research potential, and how to gain access to NEPS data resources. NEPS was launched in 2009 as an interdisciplinary, multicohort, multiactor, longitudinal study for analyzing the development of competencies, educational processes, educational decisions, and returns to education in formal, nonformal, and informal contexts throughout the life span. The study consists of six starting cohorts—

early childhood, kindergarten children, fifth graders, ninth graders, first-year students in higher education, and adults—with a total of 60,000 sampled persons. These panel participants are regularly interviewed and tested over an extended period of time. Additionally, about 40,000 context persons such as parents, teachers, or preschool staff are surveyed. All data material is thoroughly edited and documented.

For more information, please refer to our NEPS website (Link). In addition to the longitudinal collection of various competence measurements, a key element of the NEPS study is the focus on social inequality and the role of ethnic background with regard to educational processes and their consequences for individual life courses: Why do educational decisions vary across different sociostructural groups? What are the mechanisms connected to migration biography that influence the acquisition of skills and educational success?

Registration: There is no fee to attend this workshop, but places are limited. Interested researchers are encouraged to register in advance by sending an e-mail with their name and affiliation to fdz@lifbi.de. Workshop slots will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

Instructor: Dr. Daniel Fuss, Head of Research Data Center at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories, Bamberg, Germany

Contact: LEIBNIZ INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATIONAL TRAJECTORIES RESEARCH DATA CENTER LIfBi (FDZ-LIfBi) Dr. Daniel Fuß Wilhelmsplatz 3 | 96047 Bamberg | Germany E-mail: fdz@lifbi.de www.lifbi.de

Please note: Workshop participants will have the opportunity to register for our remote desktop environment called RemoteNEPS and to get some hands-on practice with the data. If you can arrange it, please visit us at the NEPS information booth at the ISA RC28 Summer Meeting (August 8–10, Columbia University) in order to get enrolled for the remote access to NEPS data.

2. Nomination for the Significant Scholarship Award

The RC28 will make one award annually to recognize an article of Significant Scholarship in Social Stratification that has been published in the three years prior to the year when the award is made. In order to be eligible, the article must have been presented prior to publication at one of the RC28 meetings or the RC28 sessions of the World Congress, and the fact of its presentation must be acknowledged in the published version of the article or the author should provide other forms of proof (such as a copy of the program).

Nominations should include a full citation of the article and a brief statement as to why the nominating individual considers the article to merit the award. Nominations will be submitted to the RC28 Secretary, who will compile the nominations and deliver them to the subcommittee appointed by the Board for consideration. Nominations are accepted only from RC28 members. Self-nominations are permitted. Please submit your nomination for the 2017 award by 1 February 2017 to RC28 Secretary (Hiroshi Ishida) at rc28.isa@gmail.com.

3. Call for Session Proposals at the ISA World Congress of Sociology

The XIX International Sociological Association (ISA) World Congress of Sociology will take place in Toronto, Canada, on July 15-21, 2018. RC28 is allocated 24 sessions at the World Congress (one slot is reserved for business meeting) based on the number of RC28 members who are also ISA members.

RC28 members are welcome to submit session proposals. The proposal should include: session title, description of the session (about 50 words), and contact details of the organizer(s) (name, status, affiliation, country, e-mail). Session organizers are responsible for selecting abstracts and organizing the session in October, 2017. Please submit proposals to the RC28 Secretary, Hiroshi Ishida (rc28@iss.u-tokyo.ac.jp) by 31 January, 2017.

The list of sessions will be announced by the ISA on the ISA conference platform run by Confex in mid-April, 2017. The submission of abstracts begins on 25 April, 2017 and ends on 30 September, 2017. Abstracts must be submitted through the ISA Confex platform on the web. Please check the ISA webpage.
