[RC28 Scholarship Award]
The RC28 board makes one award annually to recognize an article of Significant Scholarship in Social Stratification that has been published in the three years prior to the year when the award is made. For example, for the 2019 award articles appearing in journal issues from 2016-2018 are eligible. The criterion for the award is the significance, rigor, and novelty of the article's contribution to scholarship in social stratification. The RC28 Significant Scholarship Award comes with a sum of 1,000 US dollars. If there are multiple authors, the sum is divided equally among them.
In order to be eligible, the article must have been presented prior to publication at one of the RC28 meetings or the RC28 sessions of the World Congress, and the fact of its presentation must be acknowledged in the published version of the article or the author should provide other forms of proof (such as a copy of the program).
The award shall be made by the RC28 Board, which will decide upon the recipient at the Spring RC28 meeting. The recipient of the 2019 award will be announced and the award will be delivered at the 2019 Summer meeting in Princeton. The last award was presented to Ineke Maas and Marco van Leeuwen at the RC28 meeting in Toronto in July, 2018.
The Board will solicit nominations for the award and consider all nominations received by February 1 for that year's award. Nominations should include a full citation of the article and a brief statement as to why the nominating individual considers the article to merit the award. Nominations will be submitted to the RC28 vice-president, who will compile the nominations and deliver them to the subcommittee appointed by the Board for consideration. Nominations are accepted only from RC28 members. Self-nominations are permitted.
Please submit your nomination for the 2019 award by 1 February 2019 to RC28 Vice president (Ineke Maas) at rc28.emails@gmail.com.

Dear RC28 Members
This week I have two announcements.
1. From Gunn Elisabeth Birkelund (g.e.birkelund@sosgeo.uio.no), November 1, 2018
There's an opening for a completely open, come-with-your-own-research 4-year postdoctoral researcher position at the Dept of Sociology & Human Geography at the University of Oslo. This should be one of the best non-tenured early-career jobs in academia, with a low teaching load and a reasonably long perspective (4 years). The period can be extended (1:1) if you have parental leave spells or similar reasons.
https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/159156/postdoctoral-fellow-in-sociology
To apply one must have submitted the dissertation, and to be considered for the position one must have the dissertation approved. One must also submit a project proposal. Read the advertisement carefully. A competitive applicant probably has some publications out/forthcoming already.
At the Department, we have several register data bases with interesting data for research projects, that in principle could be used by the post.doc., assuming permissions are granted by relevant data protection boards/institutions.

Would you kindly circulate the following potentially of interest call to our members?
Dear colleagues,
We are writing to remind you that the deadline for submissions to the MZES Open Social Science Conference 2019 (OSSC19) is approaching fast. Please submit your extended abstracts (750 words max) before 22 August 2018, 24:00 CEST.
OSSC19 will be held at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) in Mannheim, Germany, from 25-27 January 2019.
It offers an opportunity to connect with the open science movement for all researchers from across the social sciences who are interested in debating, advancing, and practicing open science. OSSC19 will feature keynotes by Jeremy Freese (Stanford University), Thomas König (University of Mannheim), Arthur Lupia (University of Michigan), and Julia Rohrer (University of Leipzig).
There are two options for you to participate in the conference:
You can give a talk that provides discussion of, a methodological advance to, or a demonstration of best practices in open social science.
You can submit an extended abstract for a study you would like to conduct (i.e., a “pre-registered analysis plan”). The submitter(s) of the best abstract will get the opportunity present their study plan at OSSC19 and will win free collection of survey panel data from a high-quality national probability sample or, alternatively, financial support for a data collection effort of the participant’s own choosing.
Please note that OSSC19 is transdisciplinary in nature: Submissions from any social science discipline are welcome!
We look forward to your submissions. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

[RC28 message 2018_083] Call for Papers ESS conference Mannheim April 2019
Please send this out to the Mailing list of the RC28. It could be interesting for some of the members.
Oshrat Hochman, PhD, gesis Leibniz-Institut für Sozialwissenschaften, Mannheim
Email: oshratb@gmail.com
The Fourth European Social Survey Conference:
Turbulent Times in Europe: Instability, Insecurity and Inequality
15th to 17th of April 2019
GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences and the University of Mannheim, Mannheim, Germany
Call for papers is now open
Europe is going through turbulent times. There is increasing diversity within and between European societies in ethno-cultural, linguistic, and religious terms, or, more simply, in ways of life and prevailing values. Such diversity is arguably fostering cultural insecurity among large segments of the population, with backlashes manifesting themselves in different modes of political mobilization. For many Europeans, stagnating incomes, the perception of increasing social inequalities, transformed labor relations, and the uncertainty about life prospects have created profound economic insecurities. The Great Recession and the financial crisis have affected all European societies to different extents. Resulting concerns about the ability of existing political institutions to manage risk and provide good governance, or about the ability to hold existing loci of power accountable, have shaken previous allegiances to the political status quo, whether to mainstream parties, the European Union, or even liberal democracy itself. Previously trusted sources of information — science, expertise, the mainstream media, and all sorts of secondary organizations — are now constantly questioned on the basis of their aloofness, irrelevance, or bias.
The fourth International ESS Conference aims to show the depth and breadth of scientifically rigorous research made possible as a result of the high quality comparative data provided by the ESS. It will present research that uses data from the European Social Survey (exclusively or in conjuncture with other data) to address the issues mentioned above.
The conference committee invites leading researchers in their field who are using ESS data to submit abstracts for paper presentations showcasing their current research on issues like climate change, the welfare-state, social inequality and stratification, immigration, democracy and political participation, and methodological aspects of the ESS. We also invite papers on health and subjective well-being, anti-immigrant sentiments, human values, justice, and other topics for which ESS data is relevant.
In your submission please indicate the session ID number to which your paper fits best. You can indicate up to two different possible sessions for your paper. Should your paper not fit any of the proposed sessions, please submit it anyway indicating that there is no suitable thematic session for the topic. The complete list of sessions is available here.
For your paper to be considered, please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words (plus 3-5 keywords). Abstracts should be emailed to essconference2019@gesis.org by 15.9.2018. After the review process and no later than 30.11.2018 you will get a notice about the decision regarding your paper. For more Information about the conference please see the ESS webpage or email essconference2019@gesis.org

[RC28 message 2018_073] Call for Researchers - Crowdsourcing Replication Initiative
Given the high level of methodological skills among RC28 members and perhaps an interest in promoting new forms of social science I would like to distribute the following call for researchers to our mailing list. The purpose is to get as wide a variety of social scientists as possible and it would be great to have members of the social stratification and mobility community represented in this project.
Crowdsourcing Replication Initiative: We seek researchers to replicate and expand a previously published cross-national macro-comparative study. The goal is to explore and develop crowdsourcing as a new method that might surpass what a single researcher could achieve. The topic of investigation comes from the field of immigration and social policy, but we seek researchers of all disciplines and levels to participate. All full participants will be co-authors on the final paper, they may work in teams of up to 3 persons, and will engage in covariance and regression analyses in a multilevel setting in addition to group-based interactions regarding best practices in analyzing the data. Deadline to register: July 27th, 2018. Read more:

[RC28 message 2018_070] Call for submissions: RSSM special issue on experimental methods in social stratification research
The journal Research in Social Stratification and Mobility invites contributions to a special issue involving applications of experimental methods to social stratification research. Field experiments, vignette studies, curriculum studies using the correspondence test method and laboratory experiments are increasingly used by sociologists and economists to understand the mechanisms driving inequalities in education and labor market participation, family dynamics, migration, and housing.
We invite both empirical contributions and methodological reflections. Empirical contributions should also address and explicitly discuss study-specific issues of internal and external validity and ethical concerns. Methodological reflections may discuss, in more general terms, these issues or other issues that are relevant to the practice of these methods in empirical research.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses based on applications of these methods to social inequality domains are particularly welcome. Policy evaluation analyses are welcome to the extent that they inform also theoretical debates in social stratification research.
The deadline to submit a paper is February, 28 2019. To submit a paper, refer to the website of the journal and indicate that you contribution targets the special issue:
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/research-in-social-stratification-and-mobility/
A related seminar will be held in June 2019; revision work should be planned between June and mid-October 2019; the deadline for the final acceptance is November 31, 2019. The special issue is planned to be published in December 2019.

[RC28 message 2018_061] PhD position within the SCOOP project
SCOOP is a research and training center dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of sustainable cooperation as a key feature of resilient societies. The center connects research groups from sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, public administration, research methods, and statistics. In May 2017, the research program ‘Sustainable Cooperation – Roadmaps to a Resilient Society’ was awarded a research grant in the NWO Gravitation program. The SCOOP program is carried out in a total of 60 PhD projects at the universities of Groningen and Utrecht, but also at Amsterdam VU, Rotterdam, and Nijmegen.
We are now inviting applications for PhD positions (four years). In addition, there are vacancies for two postdoc positions (two years).
Secure and Precarious Employment and Cooperative Tendencies in Workplaces
Aim of the project: To study how the use of secure and precarious forms of employment impacts the sustainability of cooperation between employees, and between employees and management at workplaces in a long-term and cross-country perspective.
Background: Sustainable cooperation in workplaces is essential for the flourishing of individuals and organizations. It can come in many forms and shapes, ranging from workers complying to safety regulations, to constructive strategies of managing labor conflicts. In the post-WWII period of economic growth, organizations in the West typically offered life-long employment, thereby creating favorable conditions for sustaining both employee-employer (´vertical´) and employee-employee (´horizontal´) cooperation (Kalleberg, 2011). Since the 1980s, pressures from global competition and technology development led many organizations to adapt a more flexible and diversified approach to employment relations. An important part of this strategy consists in providing precarious (temporary and externalized) forms of employment for workers whose labor is considered to be not essential for organizational success, while maintaining secure (long-term and internalized) employment relations for their core workforce. Management narratives emphasize the labor costs and productivity aspects of combining precarious and secure employment (Lepak & Snell 2002).
However, little is known about how the use of precarious employment impacts sustainable cooperation in work organizations. Existing studies focus predominantly on compliance and commitment, of contingent workers, neglecting three important dimensions: (1) the vertical cooperation of the core workforce, 2) horizontal forms of cooperation (such as pro-social behaviors and co-worker solidarity), and 3) the interplay and co-evaluation of horizontal and vertical cooperation in workplaces using contingent employment. In addition, research on employment forms and cooperation outside the US is very scarce, leaving it open whether similar processes play out in institutional environments regulating employment relations and labor protection differently. In this project, we aim to address these important omissions.
There are contradicting observations in the literature regarding the relation between employment and cooperation. According to the organizational literature on identity and conflict, employment uncertainties alienate workers, generate competition, and antagonize different groups of workers, which diminish sustainable horizontal and vertical cooperation (David-Blake et al 2003; Smith 2010). Social historical studies on class formation, however, argue that employment uncertainties have the capacity to foster horizontal cooperative tendencies among workers in precarious positions such as organized industrial action (Thompson, 1963). Employment uncertainties may also increase the importance of identities based on occupational group and profession, leading to new forms of cooperation beyond organizational boundaries (Barley and Kunda, 2006). The project will bring together the organizational and social historical literatures to study how precarious employment impacts sustainable cooperation.
Research design: A multi-method research design will be used. Firstly, the project will use the European Sustainable Workforce Survey (ESWS). The ESWS is unique because (a) it is a recent, large-scale survey among 11,011 employees (wave 1/2016 and wave 2/2018) nested in 869 teams in 259 organisations in 9 European countries (UK, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Bulgaria), (b) contains longitudinal information about horizontal cooperation (individual worker´s commitment to the organization, and extra-role behaviour) and vertical cooperation (helping behaviour among co-workers), (c) includes newly developed items measuring workers’ and managers’ perceptions of collaboration and conflict between workers in precarious position (e.g. temporary contract) and core employees , also (d) social network data of informal ties between co-workers within the work team. It(e) allows cross-country and cross-industry comparisons. Second, using linked-employer employee data on the Netherlands (CBS SSB) we can assess the economy-broad implications of the use of precarious employment in organizations to vertical cooperation (voluntary turnover) and horizontal cooperation (strike participation). Finally, to better understand the co-evolution of horizontal and vertical cooperation, we also undertake a workplace ethnography in one or two firms. Historical sources may include harmonized censuses and other register data (https://international.ipums.org) and in depth factory data (e.g. Penn 1984).

[RC28 message 2018_059] Invitation to join ASA Section on Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility
We write to invite you to consider joining the American Sociological Association’s Section on Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility (IPM) in 2018. Our section seeks to foster research and disseminate knowledge on the distribution of material and nonmaterial resources, and the economic, social, and cultural forces that generate and perpetuate unequal distributions of these resources. We welcome members of all theoretical and methodological persuasions and embrace work that considers inequalities in all institutions and social contexts around the world. We have a growing international membership, and we hope this trend continues.
We wanted to let you know about some of the latest, exciting developments for our section:
· Newsletter. We have recently created a section newsletter (https://asaipmsection.wordpress.com/newsletter/). The newsletter covers news on conferences, funding opportunities, and job openings relevant to section members. It also highlights the latest research from section members and features member essays on an array of topics. Two particularly unique features of the newsletter are worth noting: (1) each newsletter features a Junior Faculty Spotlight that gives our members an opportunity to get to know the work and scholarly interests of our junior faculty and (2) each newsletter includes an IPM dialogue where senior scholars answer professional development questions submitted by graduate students. Personally, we find these newsletter wonderful ways to get the latest news on what our colleagues are up to and learn about new colleagues we may have not yet met. The newsletter is also a great way to get the word out about the terrific work you are doing!
· Mentoring. We host a mentoring event at ASA that pairs up junior scholars with senior scholars. This gives junior scholars an opportunity to get advice from senior folks and share with them their work and it gives senior scholars a great opportunity to learn about up and coming young scholars.
· Section membership sponsorships. This year we are excited to launch a new initiative geared towards expanding and diversifying our membership. We know that many people are unable to join our section due to financial constraints. To address this barrier we are soliciting section membership sponsorships from existing members. On July 1 we will raffle off these section memberships to those who have expressed interest in being sponsored. (You must be a current ASA member to give or receive a gift section membership). We already have 75 sponsorships pledged! If you are interested in sponsoring a member or are interested in being sponsored, please fill out this short Google Form.
· Website. We have created a section website: http://asaipmsection.org
· ASA Section Sessions. We are hosting a number of exciting sections at ASA 2018.
· Section Survey. Last year, our section leaders surveyed section members to gauge what the membership would like to see happen in the section. The survey produced informative results that we are currently working with to make improvements to the section in order to maximize membership satisfaction. Stay tuned!
We hope you will consider joining us! If you should have any questions about membership, please be in touch.
IPM Membership Committee: Julia Burdick-Will, Alexandra Murphy, Steven Alvarado, Michael R. Scott

[RC28 message 2018_057] PhD Scholarship - Understanding Society - Class ceiling in the UK labour market
Using Understanding Society as a microscope to examine the "class ceiling" in the UK labour market
https://www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/socialsciences/studentfundingopportunities/postgraduateresearch/#d.en.587554
Recent evidence has uncovered a class based wage penalty in the UK labour market, where wages are correlated with social origin, even when other attributes such as education have been controlled for. This has been referred to as the "class ceiling" on account of similarities with the gender pay gap. This project contributes to the evidence base on the class ceiling by examining the extent to which social origin influences labour market outcomes independently of level of education and to explore how these effects are mediated. Given the prevailing policy emphasis on education as a means of social advancement, identifying the extent and magnitude of class wage penalties is particularly important. Specifically, the study will exploit the rich longitudinal data provided by the household panel survey Understanding Society (US). The combination of data on educational and labour market outcomes with a wealth of information on individual attributes and social context, enables the testing of a diverse range of theoretical perspectives on what influences systemic differences between identically qualified individual, spanning economics, education and sociology.
The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate and/or master’s degree in economics, education, sociology, public policy, statistics, or related fields, a strong background in quantitative social science, and knowledge of working with micro data using statistical software such as STATA, SPSS or R. The PhD Project will be supervised by Kristinn Hermannsson in the School of Education and Jeanette Findlay in the Adam Smith Business School.

[RC28 message 2018_035] CfP "Inequality within Couples" Workshop in Berlin, 1-2 October 2018
Call for Papers: Inequality within Couples: On the Origin and Relevance of the Intra-Household Distribution of Economic Resources, Workshop in Berlin, 1-2 October 2018
The question of “who gets what?” is fundamental in the debate around economic inequality in the social sciences and for society in general. To answer this question, the definition and unit of analysis of “who” is crucial. Often the household is considered as the appropriate unit of analysis, in particular when considering coresiding partners. Thereby, households are (implicitly) assumed to be unitary and intra-household inequality is ignored. However, a growing literature shows that intra-household inequality can be substantial and needs to be considered to understand the distribution of individual life chances—especially from a gender perspective. With the rise in economic independence of women, increasingly individualised romantic unions, and historically low union stability, the intra-household distribution of economic resources such as earnings and wealth can be expected to have changed. At the same time, the intra-household distribution of economic resources may have gained more relevance in the last decades. Recently, new data have become available that allow studying these intra-household inequality in more detail. Still, relatively little research explicitly considers intra-household inequality.
This workshop aims to bring together scholars from different disciplines—including but not limited to economics, law, social psychology, and sociology—to stimulate discussion of innovative research projects that deal with intra-household inequality in economic resources in couple households with and without children. Questions that may be addressed include: How much economic inequality is there within couples? To what extent are economic resources shared in couples? How does inequality change over historical time and over life courses? What shapes the within-household distribution of resources? How does the distribution of resources within households relate to individuals’ values, wellbeing, and behaviour? What are the implications of inequalities for social policy and family law? We invite quantitatively and qualitatively oriented empirical contributions. Research using a historically or cross-nationally comparative perspective is especially welcome.
Confirmed speakers include Siobhan Austen (Curtin University), Fran Bennett (Oxford University), Debora Price (University of Manchester), and Eva Sierminska (LISER).
We invite the submission of abstracts (not more than 600 words) for presentations at the workshop by 15 May 2018. You will be notified about the acceptance of your abstract by 1 June 2018. Please send your submissions to mywealth@wiso.uni-koeln.de.
The workshop is free of charge. Travel and accommodation costs cannot be covered.
The workshop is organised by the Emmy Noether Research Group MyWealth funded by the German Research Foundation at the Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology, University of Cologne.

The project 'Religion, religiosity, and the social-emotional integration of Muslim youth', funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES), invites applications for the following positions, starting in June 2018 or later: 2 PhD researchers for three years, 65%
The project will take place at the MZES—an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Mannheim, dedicated to comparative European social research and the analysis of European integration processes. It is Germany’s largest university-based social science research centre. The project examines the mechanisms that drive the social-emotional integration of Muslim youth. For this purpose, (longitudinal) secondary data analyses (e.g., CILS4EU, NEPS), choice experiments, and group discussions will be conducted. The main aim is to better understand to what extent religion and religiosity matter for friendship choices and the development of national identification of young Muslims. It will also be examined whether non-Muslim youth exclude their Muslim peers, and, if so, what consequences this has for their social-emotional integration.
Payment will be 65% of a full TV-L E13 position (according to the German public servant remuneration grade table). The monthly payment amounts to approx. €2,300 before taxes in the first year, increasing to approx. €2,700 before taxes in the third year.
The PhD researchers will:
Clean, prepare, and analyse secondary data, especially (network) panel data
Prepare, conduct, and evaluate (online) choice experiments
Assist in presenting results of the project at scientific conferences or in journal articles
Write and publish peer-reviewed journal articles
Job candidates should meet the following requirements:
Very good master’s degree in sociology or a related discipline
Experience/expertise in research methods, preferably in (at least) one of the following areas:
Panel data analysis
Social network analysis
Experimental designs (factorial surveys, choice experiments)
Good knowledge of (at least) one statistical software package (e.g., Stata, R, or MPlus)
Candidates should be interested in the topic and methods of the project
Working knowledge of German (or strong interest and willingness to learn German) is preferred
In principle, the position can be shared. As an equal opportunity employer, the University of Mannheim particularly encourages applications from women and persons with disabilities.
Applications including a cover letter, indicating your earliest availability, a CV, and copies of degree certificates must be submitted by March 31, 2018.
Please send your application as one pdf to Lars Leszczensky: Lars.Leszczensky@mzes.uni-mannheim.de.

[RC28 message 2018_012] CfA - 8th Berlin Summer School in Social Science
Linking Theory and Empirical Research Berlin, July 16 - 26, 2018
We are delighted to announce the 8th Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences. The summer school aims at supporting young researchers by strengthening their ability in linking theory and empirical research. The two-week program creates an excellent basis for the development of their current research designs.
http://www.berlinsummerschool.de/
In the first week, we address the key methodological challenges of concept-building, causation/explanation, and micro-macro linkage that occur in almost all research efforts. We strive for a clarification of the epistemological foundations underlying methodological paradigms. In the second week, these methodological considerations are applied to central empirical fields of research in political science, sociology, and other related disciplines. In this second part of the program, participants are assigned to four thematic groups according to their own research topics. The thematic areas covered are: "External Governance, Interregionalism, and Domestic Change", "Citizenship, Migration, and Identities", "Social Struggle and Globalization", and "Democracy at the Crossroads".
The program is characterized by a varied format comprising lectures, workshops, seminars, and one-to-one consultations. During the summer school, participants will also have the opportunity to present and discuss their own work extensively. Participants will be provided with hands-on advice for their research designs.
The school brings together a faculty of renowned international and Berlin-based scholars. Among the confirmed international lecturers are Donatella della Porta (Scuola Normale Superiore), Steve Fleetwood (University of the West of England, Bristol), Macartan Humphreys (Columbia University/ WZB Berlin), Nikita Dhawan (University of Innsbruck), Staffan Lindberg (University of Gothenburg), and Hendrik Wagenaar (University of Sheffield).
The Berlin Summer School was co-funded by the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. Details on the location and tuition fees can be found on our webpage www.berlinsummerschool.de.
The international summer school is open to up to 60 PhD candidates, advanced master students, and young postdocs. The call for applications is currently open. Applications can be submitted online via the application form on the summer school webpage until March 31, 2018.
The decisions of the selection committee will be announced to the applicants in April. If you have any further questions, please contact the organizing team at summerschool.bgss@hu-berlin.de
