[RC28 Significant Scholarship Award]
Dear RC28 members,
The RC28 board makes one award annually to recognize an article of Significant Scholarship in Social Stratification that has been published in the three years prior to the year when the award is made. For example, for the 2020 award articles appearing in journal issues from 2017-2019 are eligible. The criterion for the award is the significance, rigor, and novelty of the article's contribution to scholarship in social stratification. The RC28 Significant Scholarship Award comes with a sum of 1,000 US dollars. If there are multiple authors, the sum is divided equally among them.
In order to be eligible, the article must have been presented prior to publication at one of the RC28 meetings or the RC28 sessions of the World Congress, and the fact of its presentation must be acknowledged in the published version of the article or the author should provide other forms of proof (such as a copy of the program).
The award shall be made by the RC28 Board, which will decide upon the recipient at the Spring RC28 meeting. The recipient of the 2020 award will be announced and the award will be delivered at the 2020 ISA Forum of Sociology meeting in Porto Alegre. The last award was presented to Benjamin Jarvis and Xi Song in Princeton in August, 2019.
The Board will solicit nominations for the award and consider all nominations received by February 1 for that year's award. Nominations should include a full citation of the article and a brief statement as to why the nominating individual considers the article to merit the award. Nominations will be submitted to the RC28 vice-president, who will compile the nominations and deliver them to the subcommittee appointed by the Board for consideration. Nominations are accepted only from RC28 members. Self-nominations are permitted.
Please submit your nomination for the 2020 award by 1 February 2020 to RC28 Vice president (Ineke Maas) at rc28.emails@gmail.com.

1. From André Salata (andresalata@gmail.com), June 24, 2019
A RC28 Session at the ISA Forum 2020.
Educational Expansion and Social Stratification: Schooling As a Positional Good
Session Organizers:
Andre Salata
Sin Yi Cheung
Carlos Antonio Costa Ribeiro
Session description:
The crucial role played by education in the process of stratification is well established within the social stratification literature. Recently, an emerging debate on the positional character of education cast doubts on the ability of educational expansion in many countries to reduce inequalities of access to resources and opportunities as well as outcomes. This session welcomes papers that bring empirical analysis addressing the positional dimension of education, especially (I) the social-economic returns from schooling within educational expansion contexts; and (II) the inequalities of access to higher educational levels within educational expansion contexts. The session is particularly interested in papers proposing new measures of schooling that take into account its positional character.

The 4th ISA Forum of Sociology will take place 14th-18th July 2020 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. We invite you to submit papers to our session entitled: "Consequences of Wealth (Inequality)". Submit your abstract here: https://isaconf.confex.com/isaconf/forum2020/webprogrampreliminary/Session14540.html.
Deadline for abstract submission is 30 September 2019.
Session abstract:
Over the last decades, individuals have been able to accumulate increasing amounts of wealth. This accumulated wealth, however, is distributed very unequally within societies and has been shown to be related to a broad dimension of socially relevant outcomes. The impact of wealth, moreover, is inter-generational and thus wealth inequality is able to reinforce inequalities in other social outcomes. Our session invites papers on the consequences of wealth (inequality) on such socially relevant outcomes, like skill development, educational performance and decisions, income, occupational position, labor market participation, health, marriage decisions, the timing and number of children, divorce risk, or subjective well-being.

[Call for RC28 Session Proposals for Fourth ISA Forum for Sociology]
The Fourth International Sociological Association (ISA) Forum of Sociology will take place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on July 14-18, 2020. The main theme of the ISA Forum is: Democracy, Environment, Inequalities, Intersectionality (https://www.isa-sociology.org/en/conferences/forum/porto-alegre-2020).
The RC28 board has decided RC28’s participation in the Fourth ISA Forum of Sociology. RC28 is allocated 24 sessions at the Forum (one slot is reserved for business meeting) based on the number of RC28 members who are also ISA members.
RC28 members are welcome to submit session proposals. The proposal should include: session title, description of the session (100 words or less), and contact details of the organizer(s) (name, status, affiliation, country, e-mail). Session organizers are responsible for selecting abstracts and organizing the session in October, 2019. Please note that session organizers do not have to preside over the session. A different person can act as a presider.
Please submit session proposals to the RC28 secretary, Hyunjoon Park (rc28.emails@gmail.com) by March 5, 2019.
Program Coordinators (Sandra Fachelli and Pedro López Roldán) and RC28 Secretary will work together to select the proposals and the final list of sessions will be announced by the ISA on the ISA conference platform run by Confex in mid-April, 2019. The submission of paper abstracts begins on 25 April, 2019 and ends on 30 September, 2019.
Possible topics for sessions include intergenerational transfer within and between families, intergenerational social mobility, gender and inequality, race/ethnicity and inequality, the roles of education in social mobility, fertility changes and social inequality, family structure and inequality, and many other related topics.
Here is an example of what the session proposal looks like:
Session Title: Multigenerational Perspective on Stratification
Emerging literature has expanded the scope of on stratification and mobility research that has traditionally focused on parent-child relationships by assessing the extent to which grandparents (and ancestors) directly influence grandchildren’s socioeconomic outcomes, net of parental influence. However, results of multigenerational effects are mixed across contexts. The proposed session calls for papers that apply multigenerational perspectives on stratification and mobility across diverse social contexts. Particularly welcome are studies that address mechanisms through which mutigenerational effects are generated. Both contemporary and historical studies of stratification and mobility beyond two generations will provide new insights into processes through which social inequality persists or changes across multiple generations.

This week I have two reminders.
1. Registration for the RC28 Frankfurt meeting is due to January 31. Please register at the Conftool conference site: https://www.conftool.com/rc28-frankfurt/
All conference participants have to be members of the RC28 in good standing at the point of the conference. When membership fees should be due, registered participants will receive separate communication from the RC28 Treasurer, Prof. Hyunjoon Park, in February 2019. The local organizers of the spring meeting do not collect membership fees for the RC28 during conference registration in conftool. Current RC28 membership fees are USD 100 for a four-year period for regular members, and USD 20 for students or members from ISA low and middle income countries (see https://sites.google.com/site/rc28hp/join-us).
2. RC28 Significant Scholarship Award
The RC28 board makes one award annually to recognize an article of Significant Scholarship in Social Stratification that has been published in the three years prior to the year when the award is made. For example, for the 2019 award articles appearing in journal issues from 2016-2018 are eligible.
The recipient of the 2019 award will be announced and the award will be delivered at the 2019 Summer meeting in Princeton. The last award was presented to Ineke Maas and Marco van Leeuwen at the RC28 meeting in Toronto in July, 2018.
Please submit your nomination for the 2019 award by 1 February 2019 to RC28 Vice president (Ineke Maas) at rc28.emails@gmail.com.
