                                                       PRAGUE MEETING, JUNE 1991

The Prague meeting on "Social Inequality in Historical and Comparative Perspective", organized by Pavel Machonin and Petr Mateju, will be held June 18-21 1991 (arrival June 17, departure June 22) at Charles University, Prague, Czechoslovakia. The organizers have accepted 75 papers for presentation and have confirmed this with the authors. Those who come to Prague without an accepted paper do so on their own risk, i.e. of not getting the opportunity to present their paper. The deadline for hotel registration is March 15. Authors of accepted papers should have received an Hotel Registration Form from Mateju. Others should request one from Mateju at once.

Please address all correspondence to Petr Mateju, Jilska 1, 110 00 Praha 1, Czechoslovakia. His phonenumbers are: (+42) 2 231 9115 (ext. 202) (office); (+42) 2 361 222 (home); Fax: (+42) 2 235 7888. Email: Mateju@cspgas11.bitnet.

                                                 COLUMBUS MEETING, AUGUST 1991

The Research Committee will meet at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA, on August 20‑21, 1991. The meeting is being organized by Toby Parcel and partially supported by the The Ohio State University. The general conference theme is: "Considering Individual and Structural Explanations of Inequality." Tentative sessions titles are:

* Gender Stratification

* Labor Markets and Inequality

* Stratification and Lifestyles

* Careers and the Life Course

* Social Mobility ‑ Methods and Models

* Educational Attainment Studies

* Class Mobility in Historical and Comparative Perspective

* Race and Ethnic Stratification

* Economic Development and Stratification

Schedule: Participants should send their paper proposals to Parcel by May 1, 1991 (see attached Conference Registration Form), and indicate to which of the tentative sessions they would prefer that their paper be assigned. Parcel will organize sessions based on the submissions and attempt to include work that reflects the breadth of stratification research. Proposals should be limited to 300 words and include title, authors, their affiliations and addresses, research problems and/or main hypotheses, name‑nature‑year‑size of data set, techniques of analysis, and central results.

Accommodation: There is a block of hotel rooms "set aside" for conference participants at Holiday Inn On the Lane, 328 West Lane Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43201, (614) 294‑4848. Their fax number is (614) 294‑4848‑474. Room rates are $55.00 US dollars per room per night (two persons can share a room). This hotel is directly across the street from Ohio State where the conference will be held, and it also provides free transportation to and from the airport between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Use the courtesy phone at the airport to let the Inn know you need to ride the van. Cab fares from Columbus Airport to the OSU area are about $18.00 one way. Those rooms from the block not reserved by conference members by July 29, 1991 will be released to the general public at that time. After that date, RC members can still make reservations on a space available basis. Arrangements will work best if you mail or fax back the attached reservation request with deposit information directly to the Holiday Inn. OSU also provides some dormitory rooms, within easy walking distance of the conference area. Each room has a phone and each suite has a bathroom. If you select a double or a quad, you must specify your roommate(s) in advance. You may pay for your room on departure. Requests for dorm accommodation should be sent along with the Conference Registration Form.  Finally, a limited number of opportunities to stay in the homes of OSU Sociology faculty are available; contact Toby Parcel directly for these.

Conference fee and hotel reservation: Conference fees are $30.00 (US dollars) per person and this will include a final dinner on August 21st; this fee will be waived in cases of need (contact Parcel). Please fill out the attached Conference Registration Form and mail the fee with it to Parcel. Conferences and Institutes at The Ohio State University will be handling registration and fees, and they accept Mastercard and VISA, and personal checks from US banks. If these payment methods are impossible, you may pay on‑site, but please inform Toby Parcel of your intention to do so.

Transportation: We will meet for two full days, so if at all possible please plan to arrive by August 19th and to depart on the 22nd. Columbus is served by several major airlines including TWA, United, Continental, American, Delta, and USAir. For those going to Cincinnati for the meetings of the American Sociological Association (August 23-27), rental cars are available at the Columbus airport (Port Columbus) from: Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar, Alamo, Budget, Avis and National. Delta and USAir fly between Columbus and Cincinnati. Greyhound bus transportation between the respective downtowns runs frequently throughout the day. Current fares are $23.10 round trip with a three day advance purchase; one‑way, no advance purchase fares on Friday and Saturday are $20.10, and $13.80 Monday through Thursday.

Salt Lake City is also the major gateway city and airport to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, Great Basin National Park in Nevada, Grand Canyon National Park and the Navajo and Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Finally, Salt Lake City is the city that the Mormon pioneers, under the leadership of Brigham Young, chose as their place of refuge in the 1840's. Much of Utah's population is the result of Mormon converts migrating from other parts of the United States, Europe and the Pacific. Today, 70% of the population of Utah and 45% of the population of Salt Lake City are Mormon.

                                                                                                ABSTRACTS

For both the Trento and the Salt Lake City meetings, registration should be accompagnied by an abstract of your paper. The abstract should be no more than 200-300 words and include the following information:

                                                                    TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR RC-MEMBERS

The current financial situation of the RC allows for some limited support for members in need of travel funds to come to RC meetings. The following categories qualify for such support: (a) members from soft currency countries, (b) students, (c) RC members in special need. As a rule, support is given upto a maximum of US $ 500 and only once in a four-year period. The awarding of the support is contingent upon the quality of the paper contributed to the conference. Applications should be send at the earliest possible date to Harry Ganzeboom, Secretary of the RC and include the paper proposal and an itemized budget.
