Conference 2012

5th Annual Political Studies Association and British International Studies Association Teaching and Learning Group Conference

Teaching Politics and International Relations in an age of austerity

18-19th September 2012 University of Hull

Since coming to power in 2010, the coalition government has introduced a series of reforms that will drastically reconfigure the relationship between society and the higher education sector. The government insists that these reforms will see much greater investment in higher education in the medium to long term but many institutions face a protracted period of austerity as they adjust to the new environment. These problems are set to be especially pronounced in the arts, humanities and social sciences where government funding is set to diminish markedly.

This engenders new challenges for higher education practitioners in politics and international relations who despite these shrinking resources are expected to deliver an excellent student experience and meet institutional expectations in terms of research and wider professional engagement. Building upon past PSA-BISA Learning and Teaching conferences this event will provide a forum for practitioners to discuss the changing context of HE, disseminate findings from pedagogical research, and to share best practice in teaching and learning in international relations.

The conference welcomes papers and proposals that address a variety of themes pertaining to teaching and learning in politics and international relations including (but not restricted to): teaching large groups, curriculum, assessment and feedback, research-led teaching, graduate employability, and the application of learning technologies. In addition to the traditional paper format, the conference encourages proposals from those who wish to do a more practical presentation showcasing an innovation in teaching and learning.
